I went to Longton High - we didn’t play football, in fact you weren’t allowed to mention it. At the start of “games” we sat in lines in the gym and the PE Teachers would emerge from their room at the front. After standing and dropping our shorts to demonstrate we weren’t wearing underpants (!!!) we had to declare any forgotten kit. If you said “Sir I’ve forgotten my football boots” for example you were called down to the front of the gym ,bent downl and whacked with a “padder bat”. You were asked what you had forgotten again - you soon learned to say “I’ve forgotten my rugby football boots Sir”. Being small I hated rugby but after the first year you could choose hockey and once I had a stick I was the same size as anyone else but soccer was never an option. It was for this reason why I went to Stanfield Tech.(as it was then).I was the only boy from Dresden junior school who did not go to Longton High on passing the 11+,I just could not bear the thought of playing Rugby instead of footy. When were you at Dresden ? I was there from '63 to '68. When I left I think I was the only boy of those who'd passed the 11+ who didn't go to Longton High. I went to Hanley High instead.

I played for Knutton with Denis Thorley who went on to play for Stoke. He only played one game for the first team. The defeat at Villa that saw us relegated in the 70's I definately played against Garth Crooks in a 6 a side tournenment and maybe Ian Moores who died young.

Played at the Close -no particular memories there. Highlight, however, was playing for Penkhull Ajax.We had Lee Chapman , Phil Sproson Trevor Brisset and won everything including the area cup.

The all weather pitches in the 60s/70s were they called Grey Gra. Short for Grey Gravel? Those pitches were nasty, we called them red gra!

No mate, moved to Market Drayton 30 odd years ago. Ideal isn't it. Not too far to get to games, visit relatives etc but far enough away to be like a different world away from the traffic jams and all the rest of the mess that comes with Stoke and most other cities.

Don't remember Mr Key, but strangely enough when I was at Hanley High there was a Mr Yeomans as the Head Teacher, and a Mr Massey as deputy Head - wonder if they were the two from Dresden ? Or are you talking about Hanley High teachers ? Hell of a coincidence otherwise.

No definitely Dresden , Alf Massey was primarily the PE/ Sports teacher, who was apparently a Pro footballer in his younger days, his son was at Dresden. Mr Yeomans I can only remember him being tall with greying hair

Dove Bank primary in Kidsgrove had a great PE teacher Mr Leaf who gave everyone a chance, onto Maryhill comp in Kidsgrove 1981 first 20 minutes 20 a side then Geoff Heath and Neil Davis singled out two 11 a side teams then gave the rest of us 4 javelins and we were told to go over the other side of the field and play among ourselves, thus ending any football I played at big school as we would put the poles in and sit down pissing around for the rest of the session.
Sad really only fell back in love playing when I was 18 and have played ever since.

That's the formation that I remember, early 1960's. Yep, same at my school (Hanley High) as well in the late 60's early 70's. I was at HHS from 1969 to 1974. Get off that fizzin' pitch!

1970's gravel 'all weather pitch' that stripped your skin to the bone if you weren't careful. For some reason St Joseph's only allowed us to use their playing field for rugby and cricket, not footie. When I first went to St Joe's we weren't allowed to play football never mind other schools loaning the pitches!!

Edward Orme Comp.... (The late Ian Moores was in the same year as my bro)
I just remember having 5 & 6 a side kickabouts with a few feisty kids from Knutton / Silverdale, and getting into a few scuffles and being warned I was going to get my head kicked in at home time.....Those were the days... 😀

Unless you were in 4th or 5th and were members of the HHS Saturday team when you played and were coached on the 2 well-kept pitches. Otherwise it was across the concrete bridge and play on the sandpit, where goalie lost a good foot in height standing in the hollow. Only time you saw any staff was when they came onto the bridge to call you in.

Westwood High in Leek. It was shit, our school team was wank.
Mr Hamilton, the Geordie who probably preferred rugby (or was just shit). Mr Buckett who i liked but only coz his maths lessons were a complete free for all.
Partly Mr Jones too, who had it in for me as he hoped I'd do rugger like my bro before me. His first comment was about rugby, told him i didn't like it, and he was just a complete and utter cunt to me after that. Mainly due to the fact that i was a cunt back to him too.

The two pitches at Carmountside were terrible .The one at Woodhead Rd was on a 30 degree slope ok if you were running down hill
The other one by Leek Rd was worse as it had a U shape valley running through it the full back lost the opposition forward until he crested the ridge. It was also muddy and a quagmire of 1917 Flanders proportions and some of the first years might have been lost in the mud
An abiding memory is of an enthusiastic student teacher being in a wall when an inoffensive youth named Viggars took a free kick which caught the student on the point of the jaw and he went down like a felled ox
He than ran at the unfortunate Viggars and they sprinted off on the direction of Milton.
They may still be running

I was also at Biddulph Grammar, but John Caddy and John Cornwall were in the Upper 6th when I was a first year. Our teacher was a Mr. Dunwell who supposedly played at Lincoln City. In our first year we were totally shit and our best result was an 8-0 defeat at Pendeford in Wolverhampton- we also suffered a caning from Leek High of 12-1, and I remember us all running around when we scored to make it 9-1 shouting “ we ca do this.” The 3rd year team at that time was okay and featured Paul Gilbert and Alan Heathcote who did well in the local Saturday and Sunday leagues. We had Biddle for the first year and I played in the same side as Paul Gilbert who from memory was quick as, and Alan Hector Heathcoat never backed out of a tackle. Remember Mr Dunwell who didn’t look like a footballer but he could do the step over. I don’t remember those schools you mention though. Haven’t seen Hector for a while but used to bump into him at Stoke games occasionally.

Absolutely fucking woeful. To elaborate, it was more non-existent than woeful. We didn't get taught how to pass a ball with the inside of our foot till the age of 10 by which time it was too late. Our lad is now 10 and has been playing and training since he was 4 or 5. His and his team mates abilities are a million miles above anything that we were like when we were at primary or even secondary school and it's all down to being taught correctly from an early age. No doubt watching more football on telly helps. We as school boys were just given a ball and told to kick it towards the goal. It never went in.

What a great thread. Can't really join in, I went to St. Joes - Rugby only. I remember the headmaster's mantra 'Football is a gentleman's game played by hooligans. Rugby is a hooligan's game played by gentlemen'.
We played footie on the playground of course and once a year the upper 6th had an end of year football game against the teachers. It's a shame really, the school was really strong at sport when I was there and the sports teachers were really good. I suspect we would have done well if they had allowed us to play football - we certainly would have been a lot happier.

I went to St. Mary's in Tunstall. Our P.E. teacher used to give fags out on the way to the Ravensdale pitch, which is where we played our games.

We used to run to get the five past four bus on Beverley Drive and ended up going home with soaking wet shoes after crossing the "bridge". I remember the hollow by the goal as well ! Happy days !

I so loved playing for the Springfield junior school team but having passed my 11+, the local education authority in their lopsided wisdom, decided to send me to Longton High rather than Hanley High (where, at the time, it was rumoured that stan Matthews was going to retire from Blackpool FC to coach the school team!) LHS played rugger and did not even allow the playing of soccer during the "playtime" periods, so I deliberately played truant for eight months before they shipped me out to Penkhull CSM and football life again. What bliss. I have a photograph of the Springfield team champions of 1957? I think it was and if I can find it, I will post on here.

Your year also had Pete Unwin, Willie Williamson and Steve Povey as I remember- our year (2 years below you) had Keith Burgham (midfielder) and Paul Longmore (goalie) who both played for the District (Staffs Moorlands)- the rest of us were pretty crap as you can see from those scores! Until last year I used to play in the same quiz team as Hector.
