Gents, I'm setting up home again for reasons we won't go into! What crockery can I get that's nice but for everyday use that's made in England. Need a big name popular design so that when they break I can order more. I'm sure you boys know the score. Thanks in advance. Hughes still in an job?

I don’t know what’s what these days, but insist on a back stamp that says ‘Made in England’ and not just ‘England’. The latter will have been made abroad. I hope to buy a ship from Sunderland one day

Peter is correct. For example, the current Wedgwood backstamp reads "Wedgwood England 1759" but I would say 85% of it is now made in Indonesia. Same with Royal Doulton and Royal Albert, though a lot of their wares are also made in China. Only the most prestige lines are made in Stoke now. Portmeirion Group acquired the brand names of Spode and Royal Worcester after they went bankrupt in 2008 and actually brought back production of a couple of patterns back to Stoke. But again, most of their lines are outsourced to China and imported back into the UK. Aynsley went bust a year or so ago, but this once proud name "lives on" in the form of particularly nasty Chinese imports courtesy of their new owners, Belleek. You couldn't make it up. But it's not all bad news. If you like bone china take a look at Duchess China, still going strong after 150 years. Burleigh (at Middleport) are now the leaders in blue underglaze earthenware following the demise of Spode, but it is expensive. I take it you're looking for something relatively plain and practical? I have two suggestions. Firstly, Steelite who have a factory shop at the Trentham Shopping Village. All their lines are 100% made in Stoke and good value with a broad range of modern styles. www.perfect-setting.co.uk. Secondly, you can find brand new old stock of Wedgwood, Doulton, Spode, Minton etc on eBay. Just do a search for Doulton Place Setting (for example) and you'll be surprised what's out there. You'll fill those kitchen cabinets in no time. Good luck.

We've got quite a few bits from the Dudson factory shop. As far as I know it's all made here.

A bit off topic. My late Dad was Pot Bank Manager for Paragon China in 1960-70s. Hence I’ve got two large boxes of the stuff in my loft that came from his house when he popped his clogs couple of years ago. I haven’t opened them as yet.

Try Portmerion Soho range......I bought a load, it says made in England and its plain white but modern and contemporary.....exactly the style that these idiots go mad for in IKEA or Habitat......but you know it's made locally. I was back home over Christmas and needed a couple of top ups on bowls......£2.75 each in the shop in Longton. On a sadder note I went to Aynsleys and see they have gone out of business...is this right?
