Hi Just heard an interview earlier this morning on 5 Live Sportsweek with Gordon Banks who is 80 next week. They were talking about the save from Pele in the 1970 World Cup and Pele had sent Gordon both a letter and a video message. The presenter said that the video message would be on the 5 Live website later. Also spoke about the move from Leicester to Stoke. Leicester had put Gordon up for sale in his prime at the age of 28 and Roger Hunt had told Gordon not to sign for anyone as Shankly was going to sign him for Liverpool. Gordon waited but didn't hear anything. Then Stoke came in for him and Gordon said he couldn't wait to get away from Leicester and play for someone that wanted him. It was rumoured that Liverpool thought that £50,000 was too much for a goalkeeper. How times have changed. What also came through was the clarity with which Gordon recalled the Pele save (as though it was yesterday) and his enthusiasm for the game and what a genuinely nice guy he is. Gordon Banks is the reason I support Stoke. He was my favourite player as a kid and although I'm not from Stoke, decided to support them because Gordon played for them. Anyway it was a great listen and well worth listening to once they put it on their site. Cheers GB Similar to Me, was my boyhood hero (still is) and I'm not from the area. He sent me a letter when I was in hospital as a kid. Happy 80th to the greatest goalkeeper.

Thank you for all your kind words and messages, I will, as I always do show them to dad and let him read them. We do spend an awful lot of time discussing Stoke and dad likes to hear and read what the fans are saying ...he knows the importance of the fans and what a difference It is to have their support. He says there was nothing that could compare to hearing the Boothen end roar ! Thanks again, hope you’ve all had a great Christmas and let’s make 2018 the noisiest ever at the Bet 365 .

As others have posted on this thread he is also my all time Stoke hero. I never ever tire of seeing footage of the great man in action.
Imho a knighthood is long long overdue.
Our Gordon Banks,Stoke City and England legend.

Brucie was 83 when he was knighted so there's still time for our Gordon. I totally agree it is way overdue. Before his accident in 1972 he was universally regarded as the best goalkeeper in the world. I can think of no greater man I would rather have as the President of our great football club.

He's an old fashioned gentleman and a great guy, he presented our junior club with the FA community club award, great stories and had plenty of time for everybody for photos and signings. You don't look a bit like I expected you to Northy

You bet he’d of been knighted 20yrs ago if he’d have played for a “big” team The man is a living legend, his dignity and selflessness is a joy to behold. Many happy returns Mr Banks, you make many of us proud to be a Stokie just by association

I met him at the Romania v Spain game at Elland road in Euro 96. I don't know who was more surprised to see who, him seeing two stoke fans at that game, or us seeing him. A true gent and he signed out ticket stubs. Why him and the rest of the World Cup Winning team haven't been knighted is beyond me!

I see Gordon has yet again been overlooked for a Knighthood in the New Year's honours list.
As has been said if he'd have played for Manure or similar he'd have been knighted years ago.
If I remember correctly isn't it only Bobby Charlton and Geoff Hurst, and Alf Ramsey, who've been knighted from the 1966 team. I don't think even Bobby Moore got one.
The Daily Mirror had a campaign last year to mark 50 years since the win but it came to nothing so it's unlikely anything will prompt the powers that be to suddenly award one to Gordon now.
Disgusting treatment of a true gentleman and global legend of the game.
Anyway happy birthday Sir Gordon of Stoke !!

Makes you wonder if our Royal Family, the von Windsors, were really hoping for a different winner in '66

Nice one son of the great Gordon! Pass on our best wishes to your Dad. I think you'll find it's Daughter of the great Gordon, Woody, but never mind. I'm sure every single Stokie, without exception, is massively and humbly proud of this wonderful man, and of his commitment to our club. It is, indeed, a travesty that he doesn't have a knighthood - however, they gave one to Nick Clegg for god's sake, so perhaps he's better off without it! Anyway, Mr Banks, Sir, we all hope you have a wonderful birthday and that you inspire the lads to give us a most unlikely win this afternoon.
