Who does Gareth think is the second best keeper in the country? Not sure either of them are in the best form, Jack wasn't great on saturday bar one fabulous save and should have done better with Mahrez shot. Watched the Everton game yesterday and Pickford had a bit of a nightmare. Bizarrely all three keepers have shipped on average 2 goals a game. I guess Southgate will give jack and Pickford both a game while his favourite puts his feet up. If this is the case not sure which game would be best for Jack. I have the feeling that Hart will have to have a nightmare in an England jersey to be displaced as Southgate's favourite.

I felt for Jack on Saturday with Southgate in attendance.
He got a big hand on Leicester's first goal but couldn't keep it out, but honestly it was hit from such close range and so powerfully I don't think it was really stoppable. The second goal just went straight through him but again it was close range and this time he was unsighted by the defender in front of him so no real blame for that one either.
Hopefully Southgate comes away remembering the blinding save instead, certainly that was more the focus of the media attention.
For me I prefer Butland to Pickford but I am completely and unashamedly biased!

I think Jack is the best English keeper however I still think he has a lot to learn. The good thing is I think he knows this and is improving his all round game. What concerns me is if he is blamed for the inevitable balls up that's coming in Russia which would set him back miles. I'd rather let Hart have that giving Jack 2 years to settle into the England role before the next Euros.
Pickford lacks consistency but again is improving and is vital to keep Jack pushing on the two of them are surely the future for England.
Hart brought back and shoehorned into a West Sham side just so he can be picked for England needs a club who are willing to buy him and back him. It's concentration levels with him, having a hair out of position seems to take priority over keeping a clean sheet. Could do a job here after Jack leaves we clearly do know how to coach goal keepers at our club.

Butland is the better keeper but I'm not sure I want him risking an injury playing for England (especially in a friendly).

He should have stopped the second easily.
But Butland is streets ahead of Pickford.

I don't get why he's hanging on to Hart like he is. It's all very strange. He can't seriously think Hart is better than Butland or Pickford at this point?
I had assumed he was just biding his time before a handover before Russia, but now I'm not sure he's going to make a change.
If he does change, I think it will be Butland as Southgate has far more of a relationship with him through the U21s and has always talked him up - but Pickford is very good too.

Butland will become first choice from the minute he signs for a bigger club than Stoke.

Butland will become first choice from the minute he signs for a bigger club than Stoke. This unfortunately is without a shadow of a doubt the case and will precipitate his move to either the Dippers or the Scum. And Jack will know this. Unless he moves in January or both Hart and Pickford's arms fall off he will be back-uo at the world cup. To answer the OP as you say neither is in top form but Jack every day of the week.

In the last 20 years England have been very slow to discard players on the wane when they have name value playing for big clubs. Usually they go on too long then announce their own retirement Outside of England people would not know stoke or Southampton’s keeper but they Joe Hart of Manchester City (I know he’s moved on) One of the downsides of mainly picking players of big clubs regardless of form. It might be slowly changing however that’s more to do with less Englishmen in the big clubs than looking elsewhere.

Butland is better than Pickford. Neither are as good as Begovic was for us. Butland is probably best English keeper currently available to Southgate, the paucity of outstanding English keepers is sad to behold.

Butland has not recovered the full form that he was in before his injury. Pickford makes some great saves but looks thoroughly raw at times. Neither kick particularly well. Hart - to be fair - has played quite well in the past couple of games despite the scorelines (Buffon would conceded a shedload behind the excuse for a defence that West Ham currently field).
If you were going to select purely on current forma and clean sheets then you'd probably be looking at Nick Pope.

Every time I've seen Pickford, he's been a complete load of rubbish. Not even 10% as good as Butland. I wouldn't even pick him ahead of Forster or Heaton.
More fool Everton for paying big money on him after he spent a year retrieving the ball from his own net.

Disagree about the Mahrez goal but Butland is easily the better of the two.

It was a bizarre call by Southgate to openly state that Hart was in his opinion the best keeper in England, I have no idea why he did it. This suggests that the no1 Jersey is hart's to lose. With very few games and obviously only friendlies coming up before they head off for Russia, there is every chance Hart will start the first game...which is a worry.

I've said this before, Pickford is Paddy Kenny, superb at shot stopping, that's it because he's not a natural athlete.

Pickford for me, just. Butland making too many mistakes. Awful kicking, should've stopped 2 on Saturday. I do feel he needs to move on to better his career.

Jacks the better keeper but this season he hasn't been as sharp as in previous years, there's goals we've conceded that he would have saved in the past.

Nick Pope looks a good prospect and if we sell Butland in the summer then we could do worse than look at him. Having said that, it probably helps him that Burnley play with about eight defenders!

Before his injury when playing for England Jack was head and shoulders the best English keeper in the land. Since his injury he has regressed slightly.
