Now I know giving sympathy extensions to creaking old geriatrics is something of a specialist area of ours, but I think this one tops even our efforts in the field... it seemed to escape the attention of this mb that in the summer freshly-promoted Huddersfield saw fit to *extend* 35-year-old Dean Whitehead's contract and include him in their PL squad for the season. He even got on the pitch against Spurs. How about that.

Decent player for us imo. Took a lot of flack for being a boring and unimaginative midfielder.

Decent player for us imo. Took a lot of flack for being a boring and unimaginative midfielder. I think it was more that we paid what was then a fair wedge for him by our standards and he wasn't as good as what we'd already got at that time.

Didn't realise we paid 5 million for him.... that is quite a bit for a player of Dean's ability lol.

Much better value than Imbula. Much better player than Imbula. Just no. But tries 1,642,865 times harder.

Technically limited player but had a fantastic ‘engine’ to partly make up for that, and always gave 100% for the team. Good luck to him! Find a more gifted player with a similar physique and attitude as Dean, and we would have a world-beater!

I liked him on the whole, decent player for us.
However, I will never forget one match when I happened to be sitting next to a small boy of about seven years old and a bloke I assume was his father. Whitehead came on as a substitute, and the kid turned to his dad, gave him a knowing look, and said "I'm glad I'm not Dean Whitehead."

Was the Whitehead signing one of the reasons Whelan (our best midfield option at the time,)seemed to be the first to be sacrificed in those early premier League seasons,or is my memory playing tricks?

Yup he was an early one off the conveyor belt of multi-million pound midfield "destroyers" we signed who tried and ultimately failed to unseat Granite Glenn.

Yep. That second season up was a bit weird. We’d finished the last one looking quite balanced and playing some good stuff and then suddenly we had Huth at right back, Whitehead instead of Whelan and Lawrence dropped again.

I was at this match! I remember the “who ya gonna call?!?!” chant the entire fooking train ride home. Mental bunch of players and supporters those days, god I didn’t realize that the Brit was a fucking zoo then even away it was different. I didn’t notice until I came back in 2014 and missed the atmosphere. Glad I was baptized as a Stokie in them early PL days.
