I'm still becoming acquainted with English football. How does this derby compare to other derbies (e.g. Bristol, some of the London teams) in terms of history, violence, etc?
This is the first time in 5 years they have been in the same division.

This is the first time in 5 years they have been in the same division. Deep hatred. Usually well segregated but if they ever "got at each other" it'd be nasty. London derbies are dull. Unless it's West Ham Millwall. That's a proper war. Real derbies with an edge: Bristols Sheff WHU/Wall Jocks 1800's religious plastic posturing derby Burnley Blackburn Preston Blackpool South Wales derby (in the 80's/90's) Newcastle Sunderland Leeds Man Utd (Pennine Derby) Wrexham Chester Newport Cardiff Most are well contained. Just the slightest spark and loss of control could result in havoc and disorder. Some of them go back over some social dynamics, and prior events from years gone by resulting in grudges and memories. Others have pure hatred rooted deep in matters broader than just football.

Every big game of Carvahal's reign ends in defeat. He has done well there but this is a very real blight on his management record.

I live in Sheffield and the atmosphere in the city was unreal yesterday. Massive united following in town and serious celebrations long in to the night last night.
The city has been starved of the derby, and good football for over 5 years now and i think the good times are coming back to south yorkshire. great followings for both clubs, makes me wish the Vale wern't as bad as they are currently and a derby would be healthy for S-O-T.

A derby wouldn't be healthy for S-O-T. It would be neither here or there in that respect. And for Stoke City it would be shyte.

Southampton v Portsmouth could get extremely vicious, no love lost there and you'd never see opposing fans drinking in the same pub on a match day.

I can't speak for the Sheffield derby, but in many cases (most cases maybe?) fans reserve their bitterest feelings towards their neighbouring town / city, rather than for those they share their city with. Pompey / Soton, Castle / Sunderland, the East Lancs derby and Bristol / Cardiff are all a bit unpleasant (and obviously Man Utd / Liverpool). But are the Manchester, Merseyside and Nottingham derbies really that bitter?

Portsmouth/Southampton, Newcastle/Sunderland, Blackburn/Burnley etc... don't have anyone to share their city/town with, though. Something like Manchester United v Liverpool would perhaps be a bigger game to both than their city derbies, but that's due to a range of factors. Is Everton v Manchester City a bigger game than Everton v Liverpool? (How about Everton v Manchester United, or Liverpool v Manchester City? Are they bigger games than their city derbies?)

Their support was lively at our place, bounced all through that Cup tie. Smart city with the trams and that. Not sure how I feel about another side in red & white stripes coming up though.

When vale first got into the same division as us we played at the vic and our/some "supporters" were waiting for them, I was walking past the away end and several vale fans seemed surprised at the threats flying round and pissed up idiots started throwing punches, several vale fans got beaten up
I was stunned and wasn't expecting it myself.
I worked in burslem at the time and the rivalry was banter, I was one of the people who went Stoke and vale in the seventies, they knew it and so did the vale fans, after that everything changed, the banter tone changed to personal stuff.
Then the internet happened, now keyboard warriors piss each other off to the point where it's hatred.

BUT... Everton's biggest game of the season is Liverpool, and Manchester City's biggest game is Manchester United. I'm not disputing 'other' games can mean a lot, or have 'hatred'... Travelling to Grimsby was always an interesting day out, but if Grimsby & Vale were in the Premier League with us which would we all be looking forward to the most?
