Who can forget his powerful, majestic call for Geoff Hurst's hat-trick completing goal in the 1966 world cup final?
"Hurst could make it three. He has. That's it. That is it."
Like being there, isn't it?

He wasn't a particularly good commentator it's just that he evokes memories and facilitates the feeling everything was better before.

I can remember a lot of the 70's guys on ITV - Gerald Sintadt up here in the NW, Brian Moore, MartinTyler in his former life, Fred Dineage (HOW!) etc etc. but I'm hard pressed to name even one commentator from MOTD now!

"Star Soccer" shown on ATV on Sunday afternoons was a proper football programme.
Hugh Johns always seemed enthusiastic about the seventies Stoke team.

The simplicity of the commentary
The examples of Star Soccer posted elsewhere involving Stoke at St Andrews in 74/75, and the quagmire that was the Baseball Ground Both goals involve a J Greenhoff Esq. and Hugh Johns sums it up beautifully for both .

Joe, I'm older than you and can assure you that watching Stoke for a few years in the mid 70s was better . I remember walking up to his commentary position after a game in about '73 when most people had gone and he was doing a little after-the-game summary.

Another from the 70's Star Soccer on a Sunday afternoon era and loved the sound of Hugh Johns voice and his commentary.Used to be a big group of us who instantly after watching Star Soccer would rush out to the local field and have a kick about trying to recreate the save by Mark Wallington, the John Richards goal or whatever was the best moment of that week's programme.

Anyone remember John Chiedozie from roughly the same era.He was my favourite non Stoke player at the time.Seen him on TV a few times playing for Orient and just loved watching him. Recall Notts County visiting the Victoria Ground around 1982 and i couldn't wait to see him play live. Weird memory i know.

Was it this Werrington? Don't think it was a ATV advert though I'm fucking confused now mate Brew xi looks favourite The Brew XI notion comes from the fact it was on scoreboard/clock at St Andrews I think, and well a lot of ATV games centred around Blues & Villa during that period. I mean you look back at that era of football & ales, and you associate Brew XI, Ansells, Double Diamond etc (and I was only a kid at the time too!)

When I was a lad in the 70s I used to get the train back to Congleton but it didn't leave until maybe 5.30 so I always had a bit of time on my hands.
I often used to hang around in the Boothen Paddock and would watch the likes of Hugh Johns doing the post match interviews on the pitch by the tunnel.
