Yeah that's obviously it. It's not because he gets shafted down the left by Top tier players is it?
No he doesn't get shafted defensively
Players like Valencia have no problem containing Pieters as he tries to deliver. Against Rochdale he's going to have a much easier time no matter where he is on the pitch. Have to be a complete wet wipe to think he doesn't even know what his strongest foot/side is.
Fuck off. It's ROCHDALE! He'd get turned inside out against any prem opposition.
Yeah it's not like a Prem team has ever gone out to the likes is it?
H
That's not the point he was making. The point he was correctly making is that a good game for Erik against League One opposition in an unfamiliar position is not a reliable indicator he could be as successful in that position in the Premier League.

I know all too well what point he was trying to make and why?
IMO the management at present have the opportunity to search and pursue better players than what we presently have. How can anyone be satisfied with the calibre of our present wing backs. Johnson and Pieters have been poor and although he tries hard Diouf is not the answer. I was impressed with Tymon tonight but has Hughes got the bottle to push him into the team. Cameron is our best option option at RWB but we still need to sign a recognised person of quality into our squad.

Anyone else see Hughes's smirk in his post-match comments about it being important to see Ramadan at wing-back? May be something the management are considering?

I could never see the attraction of putting a right footer like Ramadan at LEFT wing back. His whole game as an inverted winger involves cutting inside onto his stronger foot. But I'm delighted that when Pieters went off it was Ramadan who ended up in the right wing back slot. I have no idea whether he will develop into a viable option there in Premier League games but AS A WING BACK, he has a much better chance of succeeding on the right than he does on the left.
It is ironic that his first goal for the club comes in a brief spell on the right. As a striker he will no doubt have expected to do better cutting in from the left. Maybe the fact that he scores in a brief cameo on the right of the pitch (and it wasn't an easy finish) will convince him that he has more strings to his bow than maybe he thought he had.

I think you've made that point before Forny
I tend to agree with what you're saying, but without seeing him play in a particular position, I honestly couldn't say just how well he'd perform there; especially someone that's early in their career and still developing. Who'd have thought MDB would be a competent RB or RWB? Or that the left-footed Pieters would perform so ably at RWB? The truth is we need quality cover for both wing-back positions, and if Ramadan can do that when required, then that's fine with me.

And I'll probably continue to make it. Like you say, you don't really know what will happen until you try it. I think when you look at the options we now have up front, despite lacking a top line striker, we are very well equipped in Jese, Shaq and Choupo for the positions just behind the main striker. That leaves Ramadan looking for a role as a starter unless one of the others gets injured or loses form. Despite our well publicised problems in both wing back positions it seems to me that we probably won't sign two wing backs before the end of the month. That means we have to make do with what we have in at least one wing back position - and it would be criminal not to give Ramadan a chance to show what he can do. He is strong, puts in decent tackles and puts himself about albeit not with blistering pace. There is a chance (I won't put it stronger than that) that he may do the business as a right wing back. Certainly he would be less likely to give away penalties than Diouf! I'm encouraged by last night and I hope he gets other opportunities in the near future on the right - even if at first they come from the bench in Prem games.

Judging by LMH's wry smile, I think that he may be thinking along the same lines

Eric had no trouble against Arsenal......he's a good defender at any level, he just had a bit of a poor spell and plays with slight injuries unlike some of his more illustrious team mates!
