Fülöp considers options
Jun 5 2008 by Luke Edwards, The Journal
SUNDERLAND goalkeeper Márton Fülöp looks set to turn down the chance of a move to Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven to sign for newly-promoted Stoke City, writes LUKE EDWARDS.
Although a transfer to one of the biggest clubs in Holland would be an attractive one, the 25-year-old does not want to spend any more time on the bench.
Fülöp has only managed five first-team appearances for the Black Cats since a £500,000 move from Tottenham Hotspur in January 2007 and was sent out on loan to Leicester City and Stoke last season.
As a result, although a switch to PSV looks a more glamorous option, the Hungarian feels a permanent move to Stoke would give him a better chance of establishing himself as a first-choice goalkeeper. Fülöp, who has spent the majority
of his time in England on loan at Championship and League One clubs, has not been transfer-listed by Sunderland boss Roy Keane, who would like to keep him at the club as a rival to Craig Gordon.
But the player has grown tired of waiting for a chance to prove himself at the Stadium of Light. The shot-stopper impressed on his one senior outing last season – the final-day defeat by Arsenal – but he knows Gordon has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League after a difficult start to his first season in English football.
Fülöp said: “My dream came true when I had the chance to play my first game in the Premier League.
“I was extremely happy when my name was included on the team sheet. I want to play regularly now, there are some interested teams from the Premier League and the Championship where I would be first-choice keeper. I won’t mention any names but I think it is likely that I will be playing for another club next season.”
Reports in Holland have claimed PSV have already enquired about a possible £500,000 deal, but Keane wants a bigger fee so that he can boost his own transfer kitty this summer.
Stoke are on the look-out for a new goalkeeper following their promotion from the Championship and, while Fülöp’s stay at the Britannia Stadium was a short one after he was called back to Sunderland because of an injury to back-up keeper Darren Ward, he is highly rated by manager Tony Pullis.
Fülöp added: “So far I have not really listened to the rumours about me, but now I am waiting for the right offer to come. I want to play for a club which will really rely on me.” www.journallive.co.uk/newcastle-sports/safc/safc-news/2008/06/05/f-l-p-considers-options-61634-21025953/

He seems a sensible bloke that just wants to play football. Pulis likes him, he's a good keeper-made a dodgy mistake against Croatia mind but on the whole the situation seems bob on for signing him.

www.sunderlandecho.com/sport/Sunderland-keeper-eyes-Premiership-move.4154957.jpThe Sunderland Echo have got pretty much the same piece. But they don't seem to have any firm steer on where he's going, so any deduction that it's 100% Stoke looke pretty speculative - although that seems to be the way the wind has been blowing for a while? He must have had enough of benches - in England or Holland. If we get him, surely Nash won't come to sit on the bench?

After all the discomfort over the years of stokes inability to swiftly tie up the signings of players we want, this is one we absolutely, geniunely, have to get done IMHO.
Get 'im signed Tone!

Maybe he would - he's not getting any younger and he seemed content enough to do so at Wigan?

Maybe - but is there that much mileage in swapping 3rd choice at Wigan for back-up here?
Sub goalie nust be the hardest position in the squad to fill. And keeping that bloke happy if he's got any ambition at all must be impossible.

8 June 2008 Villa eyeing Hungarian goalie BARCLAYS PREMIER LEAGUE
Two Aston Villa staff flew out to watch Marton Fulop, 25, in action for Hungary.
The Sunderland goalkeeper was playing for his country against Croatia and Villa's chief scout Ian Storey-Moore, as well as goalkeeping coach Seamus McDonagh, flew to Budapest.
Villa linked to Fulop in the People.
Apparently he dropped a right clanger for the Croatian goal, so if it's true, perhaps they wouldn't have been won over?

He made a massive fuck up. The ball sailed over his head and they scored off a corner. But Cech has said the ball is keeper unfriendly so he may just about get the nod. This deal for Fulop should be done asap.

It might help us if indeed we are after 3 of Sunderland's players with regard to money up front guarantees etc
I would be happy with £7 million for Fulop, Higgy and Whitehead
