Yet another unfathomable dismissal for Jason Roy ! The South Africa series is shown on here www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/36695894Edit - England win by 9 wickets in 1st T20

SA treated it like a knock up in the nets. They were woeful

South Africa were poor - no doubt.
But England were excellent with bat and ball.
Nice to see Bairstow getting a knock.

2nd T20 to SA by 3 runs.
We should have won this comfortably.
The reason we didn't is, sadly, down to a poor debut performance from Liam Livingstone. It all seemed a bit much for him. He could hardly lay bat on ball and if taking 18 runs to score 16 runs after coming in at #4 isn't bad enough he was the culprit, from a batting perspective, of Roy's extraordinary dismissal obstructing the field; that run behind the bat was Roy's call. Roy, was going very well at the time. Add to that an ludicrous run out in the final over and an appalling drop catch when SA batted, a debut to forget for the Lancastrian.
It's a shame because there were some very good points for England particularly the other debutant's performance - Curran - with the ball and Roy rediscovering his form.
Anyway - sets up the final game tomorrow nicely.

I agree - it's sometimes harsh to blame one player for a team defeat but I thought Livingstone was definitely the weak link and the reason England lost yesterday.
Hopefully things go better in the third game.

That's pretty much how I saw it too. We didn't do a lot wrong and were set up to win at a canter. I think a more experienced head instead of Livingstone and we would have wrapped it up. Not to criticise the lad on debut, he tried a lot of wild shots instead of just getting the middle of the bat on ball. One question I do have though is why would you opt to chase on a ground with no floodlights on a dull day?

The 3rd T20 goes to England by 19 runs.
New boys Curran and Crane again did well with the ball, as did another debutant Malan with the bat. Shame for Livingstone who followed up his dismal debut with a golden duck getting bowled by a full toss whe he missed his ramp shot.
All in all England will be pleased with that series. We seem to have plenty of depth in both batting and bowling.
Right - let's get some proper cricked going. Can't believe we'll be in July before we get a domestic test played!

A good game for England. The total looked a bit short but good catches on the boundary stopped SA in their tracks.
Some good performances from both teams.
Also helped avoid having to watch Glastonbury and the only Gibb high pitch wining.

Yep time for the proper stuff. I'd go with the following:
Cook Stoneman Jennings Root Bairstow Stokes Moeen Woakes Rashid Wood Anderson
Hameed is hopelessly out of form and hardly scored a run all summer, I'd play Rashid with the pitches being dry and we have enough firepower to use him in small bursts and not worry too much about giving runs away. I haven't included Broad as it looks like he'll miss out with an injury....

Jos Butler is likely to be the extra batsman although on county form it should be Samit Patel. Joe Clarke, Ben Foakes and Sam Northeast are the outside batting bets. For bowlers would assume Jake Ball gets a go if there are any injuries although personally I'd pick one of the Currans or Jamie Overton if he is fit.

Yeah it almost certainly will be Buttler and not Rashid. But with us batting so deep and Bairstow being decent behind the stumps I don't even think it's a risk to play him just chuck him on when we need a wicket and if he goes for a few runs take him out of the attack again....

A few journo's saying there is a couple of surprises in the test squad, Buttler like to miss out as he is in poor form, Graeme Hick sorry Garry Ballance is likely to be recalled. But surprise pick Mason Crane, Ben Foakes, Ben Coad, Joe Clarke ??????? Just as I post Etheridge puts it on twitter Liam Dawson fucking hell I retired too early, no Stoneman and Ballance is back.

There is a player in Ballance somewhere but this must be getting close to his last chance......

Good luck to the man - but, as you say, the SA bowlers will fancy a bowl at him. Full and straight is all it took previously. If Ballance fails due to that weakness, Root will have questions to answer!

Seems a waste of a squad place...

Ballance is a baffling selection but presumably Root must see something to warrant selecting him, but this MUST be his last chance after so many poor performances.

Ballance is a baffling selection but presumably Root must see something to warrant selecting him, but this MUST be his last chance after so many poor performances. It can only be based on the amount of runs he's scored in the championship .....he's done well for Yorkshire , but his technique is a disaster waiting to happen against a decent pace attack , with Australia beckoning in the winter you have to wonder what their thought process is ?

Really don't get the Dawson selection, as average as they come. I can see the logic of picking Ballance but don't agree with it, there are players more deserving of a chance.
Looking like we'll go with the extra bowler, probably wise with Broad, Anderson and Stokes all having fitness issues over the last month or so.
Cook Jennings Ballance Root Bairstow Stokes Ali Roland-Jones Broad Wood Anderson
Quite like the look of that attack, offers a bit of everything, pace, swing and seam. Should hopefully be enough batting there too with a decent-ish looking tail.

Test cricket is back! We haven't exactly picked a side to get the pulse racing but I reckon we'll have enough to win the match, although I never like backing us at Lords.
Good luck captain Root.

Looking forward to Cook scoring a stack of runs this summer.
Doing what he does best.
Batting long and big.
C'mon England

Gary Ballance *sigh*.. doesn't Rashid deserve a chance ahead of Dawson as well? Shame Hameed has been in poor form because I liked the look of him.. all in all, not too excited by this.

Going really well so far - 82 for 4 at lunch with Root 33 not out. Slow over rate by SA with only 25 overs bowled in the morning session.

We're just not that good a Test Side at the moment I'm afraid to say. The middle order cannot keep getting us out of the shit and the time to bed in a working top order prior to the Ashes has now probably gone. As for the bowling attack it's hard to say, the two main strike bowlers are on the decline and whilst those coming through look decent, they don't look top class and the spin department looks steady at best.
We may yet get something out of this game and the series (it's of course only one session) but a bit like Stoke, it looks like pretty obvious failings haven't been addressed.
