Isn't increasing homelessness just the obvious consequence of an increasingly unequal and careless society where the only thing that matters is making a profit and fuck the consequences?

What's the fix? I hate homelessness and want to fix it. Right now I donate to Shelter and some local places, but if there's a better way I'm all ears. There is a better way but for individuals its not possible just keep giving to the homeless charities (not individuals) or even volunteer the better way is for a number of rich business people to set up a charity and give it a few million each they then go out and buy properties which they rent to the homeless (the government pay the fees via housing benefit) this is then re invested in more houses etc so the charity is acting as a landlord and also can get help into the people that need it. In other words doing the job the government should (all political party's) round here a council owned care home was kept empty by the council for over 2 years and for sale notices up for ages why could they not use it as emergency accommodation Way I see it, the government needs a serious housebuilding drive. They found £6 billion a year to triple lock pensions for a parliament, but when it comes to building homes they fuck around with pittances. This is the short-sightedness and NIMBYism of the past killing the dreams of people today - if we'd just kept building like before we'd have more, cheaper housing and fewer people forced onto the street. I'm convinced that one of the best thing you can do as a homeowner is support new housebuilding when they try in your area.

The problem is a simple economic one of supply and demand there is a shortage of supply this allows the rich to buy multiple houses and charge whatever they want for a house so bumping up house prices, this then results in those at the lower end of the social spectrum not being able to afford rents and then being forced onto the streets by landlords who have no social morals and just want profit profit profit!!

I work around Tern Hill and Stafford army camp now and again. I can't believe how many of the digs around there are empty.
Surely some short term arrangement can be made to put some homeless people in these houses till they can sort themselves out.

Very low interest rates are largely responsible for making housing unaffordable, people with money to invest turned to property when their savings were attracting hardly any interest and financing property was very cheap .

The 'buy to let' market has in effect removed over a million houses from the housing market.
This has been a major problem given the very low number of houses being built (relative to demand).
It's certainly not helped the situation.
Politicians from across the political spectrum have sat on housing committees and said this issue needs addressing.
Private lanlords who live in Kuwait have bought property near to me (adjacent to Stoke hospital) & rented it out to letting agencies who have sub let it to hospital 'professionals'.
It's this sort of thing that needs to be looked at as well as the number of new builds.
Both affect the supply & demand for housing and therefore price.

I think that the rough sleeping side of homelessness has more to do with family break up, loneliness, isolation, drink and drugs, loss of job, relationship breakup etc despair at not being able to have a hope for the future..... But I agree with you entirely about the buy to let market, that obviously had some effect on housing. My wife used to be an estate agent. A few years back a woman would visit each of the five estate agents in the town weekly where we live and buy any terrace house/ house at the lower end of the market, as soon as it came on the market.....first time buyers simply had no chance....the last we heard was that she had 42 in her " portfolio"

The problem is with a lot of army property the reason it is empty can be because it has been designated not fit for human habitation without investment it cant be brought up to code.

You can't stop private landlords buying houses and nor should we. The type of housing needed for rough sleepers, socially displaced and addicts aren't the properties rented by hospital Doctors.
Central Government could/should offer tax breaks to private landlords who make properties available to the DSS sector.
May has just revealed plans to block buy-to-let operators buying up new builds.
Government should build more social housing. End of. Aggressively buy up or compulsory purchase inner city buildings. Basic overnight accommodation for the homeless up to old school council houses.
Government should pass a law where they get first dibs on certain properties or where the seller gets a tax break if they sell to the state.

Another aspect is social services and the care system. We're going through the adoption process and they were speaking about a 7 year old lad who'd been to over 20 foster carers since being in their care from 6 month old. Seven year old and he's already probably f**ked - how's he going to be ready for the world at 16? Totally heartbreaking.

With caring parents like you and a good education you will see him develop by the age of 16 into a good young man, I hope all go's well for you and him and the love that I know you will give him will make him a good young man. I have a mate who was in and out of care till 14 when they were adopted they are caring and a good person despite there rough start in life

I really think as a society we should do something about the rough sleeping homeless and use some of the overseas aid budget to it. At least that way ' we'll would see and know that the money is doing some good. To be outside and without shelter in this weather/ cold should be treated as a crisis/ emergency

At least that way ' we'll would see and know that the money is doing some good. To be outside and without shelter in this weather/ cold should be treated as a crisis/ emergency Ill put my tin hat on now as I know ill get abuse for suggesting this but we treat and give more to animal charities than homeless ones, Is an animal more diserving than a fellow human being I think not!! I know tonight around stratford that a community is providing food and support to homeless people (stew) and anyone who needs it and this is a community maligned on here (the Muslims) they are showing the kindness and thought that we have forgotten in our materialistic society. they also provide food for homeless people at the cafes and restaurants' they own in the area (London). I don't advocate giving money to the homeless if you want to do that give to a homeless charity give money to the Macari centre to help homeless get off the streets. but what about a hot drink and a sandwich in this weather (sandwiches don't have to cost a lot if bought at discount or bread etc see thread on money saving for ideas).

I've done a stint this evening taking blankets, hats, gloves, scarves etc round to the homeless in Manchester City Centre. My talents literally stretch to handing out cups of tea and bowls of stew, but honestly the selfless work that most of the regulars do to help is absolutely humbling. People in their 70's and 80's from the nearby mosques, churches and synagogues who are out there night after night in all weathers.
I urge anyone who can spare a few hours from time to time to get in touch with their local homeless charity or church and offer to help.
And for those who say it's a lifestyle choice, or that they'll only spend money on drugs and alcohol or whatever is levelled at some people on the streets it would absolutely open their eyes. I was speaking to a young Scottish lad tonight, no more than 18 or 19, he managed to get in a shelter last night but when he left at 07:00 this morning he'd had his coat and gloves nicked off the radiator where they were drying. He was literally shivering behind a phone box wearing a thin jumper and a pair of jeans, trying to raise a couple of quid for a hot drink and a sandwich. Smart, articulate but clearly suffering from mental health issues and on the streets in 2018. What kind of society do we live in it's makes me fucking angry, least he's got a couple of blankets a hat and a pair of gloves now but what the future holds for him who knows?
