My family used to run shine. Full Dukes of Hazzard style. And they're Confederate family, full on rebel. I've got the music to Smokey and the Bandit in me noggin after reading that I know a few old-schoolers down here that still do a bit of backyard brewing. That shit will put you on your arse very quickly, as I found out the first time I was brave enough to drink with them. There's also a legit local "Moonshine" distillery here in Richmond, and although it's been repackaged and remarketed to the "mixology" loving hipster crowd, it's actually not a bad drink. www.belleislecraftspirits.com/It's not a "nice" drink is it? Family has a private confederate army museum in a big plantation house up in the hills. Very impressive.

Devistatingly effective though, if falling through your own arse is something that appeals to you Some of the plantations down south are indeed impressive. What part of the country is the family from?

All business unfortunately, so not much time to explore, other than the monotony of a three hour drive down I95.

Interesting mate ... a cherry whiskey ? The sweet edge takes any harshness out of the bourbon It's an easy drink and it even easier to drink half a bottle before you realise it

Like the single malts myself although I try to avoid the peaty ones as they burn a bit too much for my liking Again I like the sherry or madiera cask glenmorangie as I do have a bit of a sweet tooth

So good. Everything is good with the world when I'm drinking single malt.

Wild Turkey 101 is a lot of fun Have you tried the Wild Turkey Rare Breed? Absolutely lovely stuff, 116 Barrel Proof strength (i.e. 56% ABV). I've never had something that can be so firey but so smooth and comforting at the same time. Absolutely lovely stuff. I've really got into my Bourbons over the last twelve months and can highly recommend the following: Eagle Rare - around £30, absolutely gorgeous Buffalo Trace - great bargain at £20 in Tesco Woodford Reserve - great spice and depth for £25 Knob Creek - slightly more expensive but packs an almighty punch. I got some 120 proof single barrel from the US and it is absolutely deadly Four Roses Single Barrel - Around £35 and smooth as silk This is a really good video for anyone interested in learning a bit more about Bourbon and its historical links to Scotch:

And thanks, the video looks good, I'll give it a watch I'm more of a single malt kinda guy if I'm honest. But my local shop sells the 101 stuff quite cheap and I've been really impressed. Fiery but smooth and comforting as you say - if the 116 is even more so then I'm in I'll give some of those others a go too - always good to have a bottle of summat sweet and smooth knocking about to give a bit of contrast to the Ardbeg

If there are I can highly recommend this... Where do people stand on the Jim Beam vs Jack Daniels front? For the 'bog standard' bottle I'm definately in the Jack Daniels camp, but when it comes to their, shall we say, 'better' bottles I switch over to Jim Beam. The one posted above & Jim Beam Black being my two favourites. I wonder how long it'll be untill someone says summat hilarious like "I prefer custard creams"!Phwooooar!

Honestly can't see what all the fuss is about with whisky, bourbon, brandy...all coloured spirits in fact.
Give me a decent large Gin, Fevertree tonic, ice, lime in a wide stubby glass anyday.
