Thankfully we haven't had a major eruption for a while and long may it continue, BUT when will the next 'Mount St Helens or Mount Pinatubo hit?
Saw that report where the reporter was on Mount Etna and the thing blew !!!! ( last week I think)

Some volcanoes Mt. Etna, for example, are more or less continuously active. Just off Sicily Stromboli is erupting day and night, lighting up the night sky. It is known as the "lighthouse of the Mediterranean". The likes of Pinatubo, St Helens etc. go for decades between eruptions. Just before they erupt, there are signs that they are active - increased emissions of gases like SO2 and also with small earthquakes indicating that magma is on the move below the surface. Vulcanologists risk their lives getting close to active volcanoes (Geoff Brown - well known volcanologist was killed by flying debris on a volcano in the Andes a couple of decades ago). The worst are "supervolcanoes" such as under Yellowstone Park which have massive eruptions every 60.000 years. We are about due for another one! Hope this helps.

Yeah I saw that documentary on those super volcanoes...... if THAT goes then it's 'adios' to a large chunk of America I reckon

Trying to remember some of my geography degree but usually the more runny the lava the more frequent and gentle the eruptions when the lava is more sticky then gas cant escape as such builds up until it vents through a violent eruption such as Pinatubo or St Helens. Like Cerebal says the big worry is the supervolcano under yellow which from memory we are 1,000s of years over due for an eruption. I think the Beeb did a sort of documentary/ fictional program about a Yellowstone eruption a number of years ago it was quite interesting.
