Quite. If he'd broken his jaw and put him out for a few weeks, that would have been ok? So you expect our players to go easy just in case they hurt a team mate? Get real. It was an awkward ball that they both went for. Whelan didn't set out to elbow him flush on the chin. He raised his arm to protect himself in the same way a keeper lifts his knee when coming to get the ball. In that situation you are making sure your opponent is hurt more than you are. Its not like he's jumped for a header, looked and deliberately elbowed him in the face. It was something in nothing and it will forgotten already by the pair of them, unless of course one of them is as sensitive a soul as many on here appear to be. Don't agree. Whelan knew exactly what he was doing and it was reckless. He looked directly at Allen before the elbow was raised and a more natural reaction would be to raise hands, not present an elbow.

I love the dark arts of football. Pulling hair, trampling on toes, sneaky digs, saying vile things etc. It's part and parcel of it and if you can master how to get away with it then you've done well. It happens and in this case too it may lie a bit deeper and I like that too. None of which is remotely comparable to deliberately putting your elbow in a guy's face at speed. Surely there's a line where the "dark arts" become just reckless or dangerous? Where do you draw it if it's not at elbowing people? You're talking to someone who thinks Charlie Adam best attribute is that he's a dirty fucker. I don't mind elbows and stuff if they get away with it. If they don't it's a different matter and they shouldn't really be doing it but if you get a free one then ace.

No such thing as a free one these days, with all the cameras and retrospective action.

Glenda got away with this one!

Interesting take on the game here linknote for the media-bias sensitive: this in an article by a proper journalist in a paper that uses words. It does not mention Ryan Shawcross anywhere.
