Newly registered user around here but I've been lurking for a long time. At the match yesterday I was trying to gauge the players reactions/emotions so I thought I'd try and create a "gives a shit" [really committed to the Stoke cause] & "technical ability" index, especially since players like SJW seem to polarise opinion around here:
Just my opinion but:
GAS/TA
Grant: 7/7 Bardsley: 8/6 Shawcross: 9/8 BMI: 7/9 Pieters: 6/7 Arnie: 9/9 Shaquiri: 6/8 Allen: 8/8 Adam: 8/6 Bojan: 6/8 Bony: 2/6 Walters: 9/6 Crouch: 6/7 Johnson: 5/8

Nice kind of matrix. My initial thought was that you were harsh on Pieters' GAS. He did his usual post match clap around yesterday and I've seen a photo of him with a chokehold on Wilshire, so +1.
Got me thinking not only about the personal interpretation and nuances of Giving A Shit. I also think there's a difference between giving a shit for Stoke, and giving a shit about football, but that could also ultimately work to our ends Bony's on bench laundry tantrum could be interpreted in many ways, and I reckon yr Bojan score is debatable.

Bardsley should be a 10 for "gives a shit" and at least a 7 for TA.
He has been superb this season when called upon.

You've overmarked Walters by 3 on both criteria.

When rating a player omit the word technical.
There aren't players who are technically better there are players who are better.
We arrive at a point where players are lauded for things which should be fundamental to any player anywhere.

Yeah definitely at least a plus one for Pieters and Bardo too I reckon!

Seems to me that you've just gone on how each player played yesterday...something like this (if it's got to be done) should be carried out over the season!!!

If we could do the scores during training and collate them friday night it might be the best method for picking the matchday squad. In the meantime a game by game analysis of this kind is interesting. Personally, based on yesterday I would flip Bony's OP rating to 6/2, I thought he gave a shit, but was technically pretty shit, none of it stuck like it normally does. On a general note I would have been a bit more generous of the GAS, but more critical of the technique of em all yesterday. Perhaps they should have worn gloves?

This thread highlights where we've started to slip over the past few seasons. Going back to the Pulis teams it would be difficult to give anyone less than ten in the first column including the manager.

Sorry but there were times, especially in the second half of 12/13, our players weren't arsed enough. The methods weren't working the players knew it and it showed.

Mate, I'm far from 100% with any team made up of multimillionaires that on a bad day can't actually be bothered to attempt to do their job better but I recall many a Pulis managed team, particularly the last twelve months of his tenure, that half the Stoke players had the body language and occasional facial expression of an utterly disinterested person awaiting the sound of the final whistle. We can all admit to the occasional bout of clock watching at work but on a bad day a Pulis time just screamed 'how long to go ref?'

You forgot Kitson who was so committed that he 'ordered two beers' off the manager as he walked off after being hooked.

Shaq deserves and extra point on each index. Bony probably deserves a couple more GAS, he ain't running through any walls for us but its not his fault he can't run. Walters is a couple over on each. Bojan's 6 is a bit generous or is it, its not his fault he can't compete. Whelan 9/4 Cameron 8/3.

Adam is surely a 2 for "gives a shit" He would happily slice someone through the back and get sent off as long as it keeps up his hard man image.

For example set pieces are a technical skill in my opinion. Although I'm. It sure where that figures on this scale, do players get an extra point for being able to take a corner or a throw in? (None of ours will receive a point for throw ins, we are terrible at them.)

I think you're close enough to the mark to not make a difference and everyone will see it differently. I agree with the post on Bardsley. I'd give him a 9/7 - At times he seemed to be the only one who cared. I remember thinking, "why isn't ShawX doing that" when he was bolloxing everyone for being asleep again just before he got injured. Arnie I think, fall into the GAS about his own reputation more than Stoke and I'd give him an 8/9 Pieters also deserves another GAS point and I think Walters used to, but is quickly losing his GAS and is probably down at 7.5 already

Pieters' scores the wrong way round
Adam should arguably be higher on TA (set pieces worth 10m alone you know)
What's Johnson done wrong to get such a low GAS score?
But most glaringly, Bojan is far and away our most technically able player. I honestly think it's absurd to score anyone higher than him, or even level with him.
