Giving everyone else a 10 point head start every season deserves the criticism it got.
I think most fans wanted Hughes to turn it around if only because there are not many viable alternatives out there.
but he does need to learn from his mistakes. The squad needs to run up some Austrian mountains in pre-season and we will achieve so much more.

I also openly stated on here after Palace that I thought his number was very nearly up. That man (and his team) have got proper stones because they didn't panic and it looks clearly that The Project did not come off the rails, but it came incredibly close.

For me it was not the predictable slow start as previous seasons, it was the fact that the form had continued on from last season. It became 15 games one win, I think fans had an absolute right to be concerned. Many managers would be walking after one win in 15 games. Up until we played WBA we looked terrible and as bad as Sunderland do now.

I wouldn't dispute the right to be concerned, I was very concerned. I am however relieved that Coates didn't sack him because that is precisely the type of short term-ism that blights many clubs of various sizes, but particularly in the Premier League. Hughes' project - and it clearly is one - is worth gritting our collective teeth until we see clear evidence that it is no longer working but as Do It For Dobing points out above, the Spurs and Palace games were really bad, genuinely concerning but even still. And I feel we need to put a bigger team to bed than the last three to have me thinking everything is back on track.

Just as panicking for losing to Everton, Man City and Spurs is an over-reaction, so is claiming all is well after beating the worst three teams in the league. We have staved off the madness of relegation talk, but now need to show this form against teams who are far more dangerous.
Our confidence is up, the team is settled, the lone/loan (he's both!) forward and attacking midfielders are in form and scoring, and the defence and keeper are becoming a more solid unit, so we can face the upcoming games withe a spring in our steps. However, let's not get too carried away. We need a good November ahead of an incredibly tough December of fixtures.

I’m a bit mystified as where you go from this thread. Are we to simply to accept us starting abysmally every season under Hughes? Do we not have a right to ask why it is?
The very poor end to last season and the abomination of the start to this one culminating into that surrender against an extremely average Palace side, got just the reaction it deserved. They way they’ve turned it around from that very low point is commendable but why do people want us to behave differently to every other football fan on the planet?

Has anyone given a theory as to why Hughes's teams almost always start the season slowly? I know he suggests the team finishes the season strongly but it didn't happen last season as we finished as badly as we started. If we add the last 8/10 games of last season to the first 6 of this the results were consistently shocking and people were rightly concerned.

As the OP suggests we do need to calm down and stop all the extremist posting if we win a couple or lose a match.
Some of the above posts are still at it and don't appear to be able to contain or control themselves.
I have stood by MH and the team all season and defended them. I am delighted they won last night, their attacking was good, but I also think there were aspects of Stoke's play that were worrying, like the amount of room they gave Swansea to play.
Nevertheless we have won 3 on the trot, which Stoke rarely do. Yes they are bottom 3 teams, but isn't it typical of Stoke to go and draw at ManU and then lose at home to a bottom team? I think so after 50 years of following them.
We play WHU on Sat, who are 4th from bottom, but I am not expecting a victory, and will delighted with a draw.
Let's look on the bright side: Bony's started scoring, Joe Allen is magic, Arni and Shaq have been excellent the last 2 matches, Sobhi looks a tremendous prospect, Ryan and Indi look great, Butland and Johnson are still to come back, Bojan is in reserve, and I believe in Imbula we have a tremendous raw talent, who could become a brilliant player when he learns his craft.
This is the best time to be a Stokie since the 70s. Oh dear I'm losing control of myself.

Will this teach everybody to calm the fuck down? 4 seasons in a row we've had slow starts and some of the nonsense sprouted on here has been embarrassing. This isn't a "told you so" its simply a request that people back the manager in times of need, rather than panic and boo the team. Well done sparky for not crumbling under pressure, the team looks great at the moment. Up the potters! Completely agree with the pat on the back for Hughes but our start this season was totally unacceptable and embarrassing. He was living on borrowed time and he pulled it back. Respect to him but let's not do that again. Lots of people were justifiably concerned because we'd been absolute liquid shit for 8 or 9 months and it was unsustainable

Up until we played WBA we looked terrible and as bad as Sunderland do now. It became 15 games one win Joining the ends of 2 different seasons is silly. If there was a link it was injuries to key players and loss of form by Ryan and Pieters, something that happens to all players. Many managers would be walking after one win in 15 games. But not if they have achieved 3 nine places on the trot, never achieved before in Stoke's history, and have had slow starts before. MH is the best manager Stoke could reasonably expect to have. Give him your support he's earned it.

The important thing is to stop the poor starts.
Embarrassing that some were calling for Hughes' head. He deserves better than that. I was as livid as anyone at some of the poor management decisions he was making through that sticky period but to have given he the chop would have been an absolute embarrassment for the club. Thankfully, Peter Coates is long enough in the tooth to back him and ride it out.
There was never a need to panic, but it was pure disappointment. We're a lot better than what we showed for the first 6/7 games.

I do worry though that the 3 teams we have beaten are the current bottom 3. I will wait until we beat a top half team before I believe we will do as well as previous seasons. Not worried about that in the least! We are on a trend: a team is above us, slips to below us, plays us the very next week, we beat them. Guess what happened to the Hammers this weekend?

The squad needs to run up some Austrian mountains in pre-season and we will achieve so much more. Hughes did not give everyone a 10 point lead. We lost against ManC, Spurs & Everton (all in top 6) before the horror show at Palace. First day draw at M'Boro is acceptable and unlucky draw with WBA. So what exactly has Hughes given away besides the mess at Palace? All these FM 2016 managers that come on here demanding Hughes learn from his mistakes when none of us have a clue on how to really manage a club is getting ludicrous.

You can't keep conceding 4 goals without being concerned and asking questions. I am glad hughes is turning it around, but let's not get too carried away, he is still making the same type of mistakes he was making last season. He really needs to take a good look at his own game, he is capable of being a much better manager. Hopefully players like sobhi will give him a bit more faith in youth too. Goodness me what a load of drivel So what are you saying? There are not areas in which hughes can improve.

I do worry though that the 3 teams we have beaten are the current bottom 3. I will wait until we beat a top half team before I believe we will do as well as previous seasons. And it's those lower placed teams that historically we can never beat - very positive signs methinks! I've been pointing this out a lot lately. Normally, we throw away stupid points to rubbish teams, so to have beaten all three of the bottom three in school cession like that is not only a big improvement on previous seasons, it's practically unorecedented for us. Of those three, Swansea are actually far less shit than they appear and I was a bit worried they'd pull something off, so for us to beat them so convincingly was a massive positive. I reckon Swansea will pull out of their current downward spiral pretty soon. Yes we've got to show we can beat bigger teams as well but look at how we played at Old Trafford - we were genuinely unlucky not to win that. The strength of the performances this past month cannot go unrecognised. Rubbish teams they may have been, but we still had to turn up and win the games. And they weren't 'hanging by a thread' single goal victories either - though that would have been ok - they were convincing wins.

If the OP is suggesting that we should calmly accept the fucking shite starts to every season we get under Hughes then I fucking give up.
Why the fuck should we be the only team in the sodding league who immediately writes off the first 6 games of every season?!?!?!?
And the "but we get better towards the end of the season when other teams are getting tired" theory went out of the window last time round.
Fucking sort it out Sparky!

I don't want us to start playing in October /November
I want us to get started in august... Which is when we are meant to start

Going slightly off topic...
Might the players be better served pre season, playing eg villa Birmingham EvertOn locally than flying to America to play Orlando B
In terms of getting started in august as opposed to October

It's typical of Some Stoke fans- you beat the three teams who up until 2 weeks ago were above you, and that is of no consequence because they are the three worst teams in the league. As one of those who was calling for the manager's head after the Palace game - no I don't think that. Those were three massive and very impressive wins at a point when it was very clearly 'make or break' for the team. Also, as I keep pointing out, we have generally had a very poor record playing against 'rubbish teams' so to beat three of them on the bounce is actually a substantial improvement on recent seasons. And anyway we nearly beat Manchester United at Old Trafford. It's absolutely fair to say though, that those early performances were simply not good enough. Questions need to be asked about why our early season form gets worse every year. And of course that bud run streched way back into the previous season as well. Something was very wrong - it looks like it's been put right now but there remains the question of what we recently spent £18million on since the net result of that seems to be a player who can't even make the bench and by all accounts may have an attitude problem. So, we look to have pulled ourselves out of a big hole, let's get through the season but then some questions need to be asked about how we prevent this happening again.
