See. People can disagree and debate without calling each other c**ts. Nice one.
I realise I've probably spoken too soon and DC will call me all sorts in a min so I'm off for now.

The Empire didn't abolish slavery until 1833 and the slaves were finally nominally freed in 1838. (bonded servitude continued) The American War of Independance was 1776. The two aren't connected. The American Civil War 1860- was, to some extent, about slavery and the modernisation of the US economy. The British favoured the slave owning South in that war. Until it became apparent they were going to lose that is. I ll stand corrected however we abolished slavery in 1807 after debating it for 20 years who knew politics has always been slow then emancipation started in 1833 like you said. Either way all forms of slavery is scummy by all nations we are all equal and that is the message we should all be preaching and the message of how far all nation have come bar a few since then. Its ignorance what needs to be changed not history. Britain abolished the Salve Trade in 1807. Slavery, as an institution, was abolished in 1834.

Slavery still alive and kicking here in the UK though. Read in paper this weekend about some Eastern European locked up for it.

I agree, ignorance needs to be addressed. History cannot be changed. There is plenty to be proud about in our country's history without needing to defend the indefensible. We should be better than that.
The Empire was a negative and exploitative experience for most of its subjects. If your cultural heritage involves slavery in the 18thC Caribbean hell holes or you are of Irish descent and your family history recalls starvation in the Potato famine while Ireland remained a net exporter of food; or more recently Great, Great Grandmother Patel and her three sisters who starved to death during the many Indian famines presided over by British indifference, or your Auntie's family who were murdered in inter tribal violence encouraged by the Colonial administration during the '50s Mau Mau uprising DESPITE being held in "protective" custody by the same administration...... etc....etc...etc...
... then you are naturally going to hold a dim view of the Empire and, like Mr Gayle, be within your rights to reject the "honour" of having your name associated with it. His position seems perfectly reasonable to me. The Empire doesn't exist anymore and the award needs renaming.
I agree entirely about the evils of slavery. Unfortunately there are more slaves alive today than the total that ever existed historically.
27 Million modern slaves
