Cameron should never be RB again after that performance - hopefully Johnson is fit enough, else Bardsley Also be tempted to swap Muni for Pieters but a 4-2-3-1 suits Pieters more, especially with 'proper' wingers Other than those, I'm in!

Without knowing who will get injured between now and then who do you go with and how do you set up. 4-2-3-1 GK - Given RB - Cameron CB - Shawcross CB - Indi LB - Pieters DCM - Allen CM - Adam ACM - Bojan RW - Arnautovic LW - Sobhi CF - Bony SUBS GK Imbula Muniesa Diouf Ngoy Whelan/Bardsley Crouch Thought about leaving out Shawcross (Been avg at best, though people on here don't seem to see it), with Cameron playing centrally with more pace and Bardsley on the outside and likewise Muniesa for Pieters with a bit more technical ability to go forward. With Palace being good from set pieces I went with a few bigger bodies to try to combat it. Allen plays as a deeper midfielder for Wales and does it well, giving Adam an opportunity to add a little grit in there but worry about his athleticism to do the work both ways, but has quality to pick a pass with his left peg. Would give Sobhi a start, purely as no one else has put a shift in to take the wide spot and I think Bojan needs to play the next 5 games with Bony to see if they can get anything going. Arnautovic makes up my 11 and if he limited his Baltic like sulks to zero and just put a shift in for the games entirety he may just surprise himself with how good he could be, instead of glimpses here and there. Ryan needs more games and is improving physically and mentally each day.

With Shaq out I think most of us are going for the same front four of Sobhi Bojan Arnie Bony Hopefully Hughes will agree too Looks good to me and very few of us (if any) will disagree with that. Problem is that Sparky continues to frustrate us week in week out with his unorthodox selections. He is so unpredictable and keeps chopping and changing. I wouldn't bank on him doing anything obvious. Really want to see Adam start in this match alongside Allen and for Sparky to make full use of the bench. C'mon Mark, it's time to settle down now and play some quality football.

Given Johnson/Bardo Shawcross Indi Pieters Whelan Sobhi Allen Bojan Arnie Bony
Cameron has the athleticism and presence to play in Whelan's role, but not the positional sense. Arnie and Sobhi should do well on the wings, and can swap if needs be.
Cameron for Boj to protect a lead at 65' (move to a 4231)

--------------Grant--------------------- Johnson--Shawcross--Indi--Pieters -------Cameron----Allen------- Arnautovic---Bojan----Ramadan -------------Bony-------------- That's my pick - Geoff is bigger, more athletic and faster than Glenn Whelan, Bojan is a number 10 and Imbula is neither better there nor better than Allen as a box to boxer. Ramadan deserves the chance to show what he can do as we know the limitations of Walters on the wing. That's the one.

The more I read about formations the more I do think its about the quality of players that we have. I have been facetious to Johnny Souls team selection but the fact is we are 'top heavy' and don't have the right balance of personnel whatever the formation. The defence / defensive midfield options are staggeringly sparse - at a level that I would go as far to say is negligent, particularly if you include the goalkeeping options we have.
Whoever scores first is (as usual) going to be key but I worry that we have neither the ability / attitude to pull level (heads drop etc) nor the ability to hold on to any sort of lead (no clean sheets for 20 matches)
It leaves me with no alternative but to conclude we are up shit creek

Oddly enough I fancy us to win this one without reply. We have played well for certain limited periods in certain games so far and hopefully our better sessions of play will result in a couple of goals. With Johnson back and Muniesa on board, I believe it will be time for us to get our season up and running. I hope!

Whatever the side, joe allens energy has got to be utilised in the middle of the pitch/box to box, against spuds he was trying do work of three players in the wrong positions! Not criticism of him but the ones who were not performing!

What makes you think we would ? Just the one at Everton with Cam and Ryan and that was unlucky. Eric is struggling and Indi can play left back allegedly Im struggling to think about CM to be honest but Adam can sit and he keeps the ball moving , Whelan is not on form and Imbula has yet to learn his defensive role . Even on Saturday we did a bit better with the ball when Adam came on , even though I know he isnt fit , but maybe he could do ok for an hour . Im also struggling with the right side but as Palace are good with their wingers Diouf at least has the energy to support the right back and also quick enough to support Bony , Bojan has to play off Bony otherwise we just have an isolated slow striker

Why Whelan he's fast turning into a liability he just isn't quick enough and always looking backwards. I really think if they're disciplined Allen and Adam could do a really good job. Whoever the personnel, I just think we need to tighten up and make ourselves more difficult to break down. I agree with you and Cobs, the key is discipline. Allen was brilliant against us last season breaking up attacks and starting attacks for Liverpool. His only problem is that he tries to be everywhere. If he can channel his energy better he will be brilliant for us, too. I don't mind if we play Adam or Cameron in midfield, Cameron offers athleticism and pace which could be vital, but Adam can make things happen; tough choice. We are capable of much better than we have shown so far whoever is picked, though. Surely this high line is part of the problem and invites disaster against Palace? Unless Hughes addresses this we will continue to be picked off, as another poster pointed out recently.
