Started following my beloved Stoke in 1970 as a 7 year old in Chesrer surronded by Mancs and Scousers Started going reguluarly as 16 year old in the 78/79 season and always admired the role Mike Doyle and Paul Randall played in promo and establishing us in Div. 1 When there also liked Peter Hampton Iain Munro and Dave Watson

Sean Haslegrave, John Farmer, Sammy Irvine and Paul Randall. Yep. Add Stigger Foley, John Mahoney (a steal), Sammy Irvine, John Devine (sadly career cut short).. and what a goalie Birkir Kristensson was

Agree with John Mahoney etc from that mid seventies side. But the stand out unsung hero for me was John Farmer. Brought in as a rookie 18 yr old by Waddington he quickly established himself as first choice ahead Paul Shardlow and hapless Bobby Irvine. After Banks was signed in 67 he played as a reliable back up keeper for 5 seasons before stepping back up to the plate when Banks retired. He remained first choice keeper for two and a half seasons before he was agin relegated to second choice with the signing of Shilton. There are many older fans me included, and some players from that era who say that Waddington should have splashed out on a replacement for Big John Ritchie, who had retired due to injury, rather than spend big money on a keeper we didn't really need. Nobody knows for sure if this decision cost us the title in 74-75. But statistics from that season probably support the fact that a striker would have been better invested in because goals shipped by Farmer and Shilton per game are slightly higher for Farmer but in the last 25 games we lost 7 games to only 3 while Farmer was playing.

If you compared the performances of Farmer and Shilton purely based on their time at Stoke then without question Farmer was the better keeper and LL is right we would have been better spending the Shilton money on a Ritchie replacement. Hindsight is a wonderful thing 😉
