Perhaps a bit off topic, but if anyone lived or worked in the Boothen area in the 70s they most probably would have come across Kevin Sauntry and the Hanley Youth Project....a larger than life character with whom I shared many interesting " occasions". www.murphysmarbles.co.uk/the-band/Big Kev Sauntry? now there's a bloke I hadn't heard of in years. Been wracking my brains trying to remember the name of the band he used to play with during my days of excessive drinking in The Half Way House and Gardeners Retreat during the eighties. I see that the band you mention also features Alan White (AKA Alan James?) who was another regular performer on the pub circuit. Big Kev was a name etched into folklore of the footie team I used to run during those days. During a rather bad tempered cup game against a side from Liverpool, he came on as a substitute (for me after I'd been 'clotheslined' by an opponent, splitting my eye open so badly that I couldn't continue) and in less than 5 minutes, he'd been sent off for flattening their goalkeeper with a single punch. He never did pay his fine, so still owes us 30 quid

I met him a few times back in the late 80s early 90s? through someone who had involvement in the Hanley Youth Project. I later met Angela Glendenning who was another major player in HYP.

That's a shock, especially after visiting the band's website, seeing Kev's photo and recent tour dates (no mention of his demise?). That'll teach me for believing the internet I guess.

Kev definitely did not die some years back. As far as I am aware he is still going strong as part as Murphy's Marvels ( Google it). I was very involved in the HYP in the late 70s/ 80s as a CommunityPoliceman in the Boothen area....became good friends with kevin.....some great memories / incidents/ problems for me about how he would do things in an " unorthodox manner". A small but funny incident. I was at his house on a Friday night having finished a 2 till 10 shift at Stoke. He said to me something along the lines " we are doing a parade through Hanley tomorrow,( all the community , bands , costumes, floats), is it alright with you?" I said " it's fine by Me, I'm not bothered at all. Hope it goes well." On Monday morning at work I was asked how I had given permission for a parade that had caused Hanley to be disrupted without letting anyone know! Apparently it was chaos. Kev simply gave my name and said that he had asked and got approval." I also played in a few football matches with him myself in the local leagues....cant fully remember which.

Truckfighters must be one of the best kept secret cults in rock. Fuzzed out stoner/desert/space rock, their live shows are always well-packed.

richie22, saw The Darkness at GTM in Townsville back in May. Think they take the piss out of themselves a bit. Didn’t take any shit from the crowd though. Thought they were OK live
