No, as always, you are right DC ;-)
SuAPYG came out in 1981 and a triple set followed in 1982. There was certainly criticism of alleged "sexism" in some of Zappa's lyrics by the late seventies. I do remember that, and these "guitar" albums would have followed on from Joe's Garage. I don't know if they are a response to criticism but the timing fits.

Just read the Wiki entry on Beefheart, I'd forgotten that I was hearing 'Doc' 'Shiny Beast' etc as they were being released. Interesting stuff about Beefheart's 'stage fright' and thoughts on the Beatles. I'd also forgotten about the 'Fast and Bulbous' covers compilation, wasn't too brill, a bit too reverential. Tributes rather than interpretations. There were a few of those Imaginary Records tribute albums late 80's. The Neil Young tribute 'The Bridge' with Sonic Youth and The Pixies and Bongwater etc was much better. There was a Peel quote about hearing Beefheart in new music 'last week, today and next week' or somesuch. Enjoyed reading about MTV being afraid of the video for 'Ice Cream for Crow' "If you want to be a different fish, you've got to swim out of the school."
Think this 'mash up' is good. Beefheart, Beatles and samples of Zappa 'Mystery Roach' apparently. I like the vid.
A bit of Koko Taylor "Voodoo Woman" later.

I first came across Captain Beefheart early on, about 1970, when John Peel played this on his early evening Top Gear radio show. I was hooked.
excuse slightly ropy intro...
A few months later I called into Scragg & Lunt's in Audley on an errand for my mum. They were closing down their record section and were selling everything for 99p each(LPs were usually £2 - £3). In amongst the Mantovani's and the Perry Como's was "Strictly Personal"! I got that, Cream's "Fresh Cream", Floyd's "Relics", an obscure German Steve Miller import and two of the classic Fly/Track label samplers. I haggled them down to a fiver for the lot. Bargain!
Buying "Toe Fat" for 25p from a junk shop in 'castle around the same time was somewhat less of a bargain.

Not seen owt to sway me re Frank Z yet. Have a listen to 1965's "The Return of the Son of Monster Magnet" back there and pretend it's Can from 1970. Just ignore the bit about Suzy Creemcheese!
"Directly from my Heart" rocks as well!

"More trouble every day" is from Freak Out. I like the drumming on this later live version.
The son of Orange County is Richard Nixon.

Yeah mate I'm aware of 'Freak Out', the'... Monster Magnet' track pretty much sums up where I'm at with Zappa. A great band named themselves after that track {Monster Magnet obv.} which made me think I should like the track. But the obscurist title, nonsense intro and awkward overlayed yelpings puts me off some brilliant metronomic grooving. It's all a bit too late and too difficult for me. I find him extremely frustrating, there's moments I really like, but loads of stuff I find too busy/contrived. My favourite Zappa moment, and again really frustrating because it ends just as it could really take off and get into a funk. A cracking tune cut off in it's prime. Not enough of a pay off for sticking with the okkerd opening. I can't like everything? I reckon that lightweight technical metal bands, Frank and Bob will always be beyond me.

Looking at the exalted list in the header, this is on the Pere Ubu tack. American Angular punkish rock, taking influence from Zappa and Beefheart.
Minutemen from 84, {first heard them about 87.} One of their less raucous numbers.
Fugazi, Mission of Burma, Primus and Butthole Surfers often get cited as Zappalytes too.
And Steve Albini's Big Black. Punking the Beefheart sound up somewhat, but with the churning bass I could imagine the Captain growling and yelping 'Kerosene'! over this.

Oh well, we can't all like the same stuff can we? There is some of his '80s+ material that I don't enjoy as much.
Here's where you eventually end up if you go down "the return of the son of monster magnet" tunnel:-
