Already mentioned on numerous threads before but this season has seen a dramatic change in the success of smash and grab football - not got any numbers to back it up but it seems like there have been a hell of a lot more away wins across the division than normal, mainly from teams with lowish possession stats and breaking at speed.
No doubt defences of all teams should have some sort of system to work on over the summer and pre-season to combat it next season but it is likely to involve a speedy centre half or fullbacks to cover as well aas incorporating a few speed merchants in their own team.
Question is who do we relistically get in toincrease the speed of the team.
The way I see it the only speed merchants we have are Arni, Shaqiri (when fit), Diouf and I struggle after that - we need a pacey centre half, striker and midfielder as well as possibly a quick full back or two.

Pacey winger is a priority. There's plenty around, baffling how we haven't picked one up in the last 12-18 months.

Pace is the new modern game.

We really do need more pace in the side. Not only physical pace but mental too, speed of thought to see a chance...a few players have it in our side (Shaq/Bojan/Arnie)...another major issue is not pace, but movement...We have been so static and laboured when in possession of the ball this season!!! (Thus making us quite easy to defend against...especially against the so called weaker teams). Big summer ahead for hughes/bowen/Eddie and the transfer team.

It infuriates me how the club never addressed this. Pure pace is, in certain circumstances, undefendable. Technical skill is irrelvant if your opponent can burn past you on a whim, who remembers the mockery Bale made of Maicon a few years back?

In answer to the OP
you scour the market using your extended scouting system for two young, pacey fullbacks (both right and left) (preferably UK based already)
both in their early twenties, known for their pace as well as, being able to defend and, play a bit of football too
there's the specification
Our clubs mid table in the premier league and shitting money presently
now - off you go and make it happen
not exactly rocket science is it ?

Can't think of any players who fit that criteria. Rico Henry at Walsall but he is only 18. If somehy Burnley don't go up then Arfield. Think we will be shopping abroad.

I'd take Redmond.
Nathan Dyer doesn't seem to be getting a look in at Leicester unless he is injured?

I must say, I'm surprised at the number of mentions for van Aanholt. He'd actually make our defence worse.

We have it, just don't use it. We constantly check back, even in good positions. Leicester use theirs to effect, they make defenders commit.

Whelan is the least of our problems Whelan alongside Imbula next season is a disaster in the making. Not if Imbula is pushed further forward it isn't and we bring in another pacy midfielder alongside Whelan.

And then what about Bojan? Good question Realistically, the only thing we can do is get an upgrade on Whelan. I know we've tried to do that numerous times before and failed but we've got to get it right this time. With a mobile and strong CDM, we will be able to play Imbula CM with Bojan CAM.

We need a change of style and personnel , tweak with what we have and we will go backwards , too many players who you don't know how they will play , not good enough , Hughes has to decide who to work with and who to bin off , that's why he is paid a fortune .
