Cheers guys!
What a decent, informative and instructive thread.
The knowledge you can gain bout arcane subjects from people you'd perhaps never make the effort to talk to in a bar/pub etc. And learn something about yourself and your preconceptions in the process....

It's nice when we can indulge in threads of this nature ( not always tanks of course ) ....better by far than the raging political and racist threads that we are normally subjected to , it just proves that abuse is not necessary on here in my opinion .

Seems I was wrong about the Italian Cannone de 90/53 gun in an AT role.
Truckable on a Lancia(?)

But more interestingly...
This brute. Semovente 90/53 Tank Destroyer
1942. Mounted on the body of an M14/41. Open at the back. It carried a mere 6 AP shells. A turretless tank followed it round with more feckin' ammo! No evidence it saw any service outside of Italy.

Only six shells ? .....Typical Italian strategy ...the ammunition tank would be ....well almost certainly out of " ammo" as well

Of course if you are a dictator in a hurry, who's grasp exceeds the reach of your 19th Century economy, you can have 1000 of these next month rather than do any long term planning.

And there are far worse places for the PBI to be than brewing up in salopstick 's cosy foxhole.
Tankodesantniki as the comrades called it. Tank Riders. Subject to all of the incoming fire that the AFV attracts but with none of the protection.

It is a Churchill .Its interesting to note the mix of helmets worn by those troops , most are wearing the standard Mk1. Helmet , but a couple are wearing the newer pattern mk3 ...making me wonder as to whether they are Canadians as they were the first to be issued with that type .

If anyone was going to be game enough to ride around on a tank it would likely be a Canadian I guess.

They would be quicker walking mind. Almost , a top speed of about 15 mph ( quicker than walking , but not that much ) ....later around 13 to a sedate 12 following modifications and additional armour being fitted .

Tankers get all the glory. I think Tank Destroyers deserve a mention. Some very brave lads in these.
As far as the Western Allies go they were open topped with paper thin armour and very vulnerable to mortar fire or a sneaky bugger with a hand grenade. They may look like tanks but they are a different beast all together. Their advantages are speed and a big gun. One on one with almost any tank and they will come off worst.
Ambush predators. Shoot and scoot is the order of the day. Hull down behind a ridge line or camouflaged in a treeline 400m off and 90deg to a road with Panthers coming down it. Fire one shot and maybe one more, then scoot before the tanks can react. Mayhem.
M10 Wolverine
M18 Hellcat
And not forgetting the British Valentine Archer with the lethal 17pdr.

This is surely one of the most excruciating threads in the entire history of the Oatcake.
5 pages of pure unadulterated boredom.
