No, I'm right bisph. A30 Cruiser Tank Mk VIII Challenger. Saw some service at the end of the war but poor mechanically. To be honest I'm not sure I can recall that Tank ? I do seem to remember a Cromwell type with a large turret and gun ....but don't recall it being called a Challenger ? ....I stand corrected on that one for sure .

It was poorly armoured and not well liked by its crews. The Sherman Firefly was preferred if an awful lot slower. Seems we passed the Challengers on to the Poles and Czechs. ... like most everything else...

I recognise it now of course ....don't recall it by name though , I'd assumed it was an uprated Cromwell ....Good call on that one it's seems to be a similar concept of having a heavier gunned tank operating alongside main stream vehicles as was employed with the Centurion / Conquerer mix of the 50's and 60's ...a little like the Tank Destroyer concept used by the Germans .

Don't know too much about tanks but that Fury got some criticism for unrealism
Then again it is Hollywood!

Attachment DeletedBest tank ever produced pound for pound, fast, cheap and lethal. Almost solely responsible for driving the Germans back from the outskirts of Moscow in 1941 all,the way back to Berlin four years later - I give you the T34.......

Attachment Deleted...and this arguably the sexiest designed tanks of WW2 the Porsche turreted King Tiger or Tiger 2 - just superb engineering. Did them no good as it came to late, was too heavy and prone to mechanical failure through being over-enigineered when compared to the raw simplicity of the T34

Difficult to argue with for the reasons that you give ......technically better tanks around , but none more effective collectively than the T34 .

T34 crews were able to carry out their own maintenance of this sort in a matter of a few hours due to the simplicity of the tanks construction .

Yes agreed Bisp - the Panther was an amazing tank also with the lethal 88mm ...........the later Shermans weren't too shabby either but no match for the German tanks one on one.... There's a Sherman tank in a scrapyard down in Dresden (near Longton park not in Germany!!) - keep meaning to pop in and have a closer look - a great model shop down there as well (yeh sad I know - just like the smell of glue ????)

You mean the Sherman Firefly ? Yes thy were an improvement on the earlier marks ....the bigger gun of course , but they were still easier to knock out than the German Tanks , far too quick to catch fire once they had taken a hit ...." Ronson Lighters " they called them . Where is that scrapyard ? I used to live by Longton Park , but it's over 35 years ago now . Always been a sucker for model sops myself mate ...Is that Sherman in good condition ?

Designed to take some of the heat off the Centurion on the battlefield ....a bit like a tank armed escort for another tank .

Can't quite remember, Firefly sounds right - there was one called the "easy 8" but that may have been post war - would need to look it up....I'll get some pics if I can when I'm down that way on Saturday - my lad reckoned it appeared shortly after the finished that film starring Brad Pitt which they shot in Oxfordshire I think??? Dunno! There's a little, trainer jet as well in the yard - not sure what the main business is tho,

Don't know too much about tanks but that Fury got some criticism for unrealism Then again it is Hollywood! Indeed it is,although I think the producers consulted extensively with surviving ex-tank crews. Shudderingly enough I believe the iconic duel with the Tiger tank does accurately relay genuine tactics the allied crews had to adopt to defeat German tank crews with their superior armour and weaponry.

There's a little, trainer jet as well in the yard - not sure what the main business is tho, The Firefly and the Easy 8 were two different versions of the Sherman mate .....the Easy 8 had a redesigned running gear that was a little more lightweight than previous models ...it was a lot nimbler around the place although it also had slightly heavier armour . That jet trainer you talk about would probably be a Provost ?

They had to get in guite close to take out a Tiger ...the Canadian Sherman that killed Michael Wittman's Tiger did so from almost point blank range ..to blow the turret off .

In the yard next to Brookfields I'm trying to visualise it as its 30 odd years since I've been around there .....to the left of Brookfields was Lewis's Ice Cream and to the right was the working men's club ? Where is the scrapyard ?
