My favourite metal album My favourite tune of theirs though is Armenian Folk music fuses so well with metal. My favourite Maiden tune is probably Hallowed be thy name, but is there a better introduction to metal than this Got to be Phantom Of The Opera for me,though it's hard to listen to it without visualising Daley Thompson going hell for leather over the 'urdles....

Dio bashing out Neon Knights back in 1987 in Japan, with Craig Goldy on guitar who is criminally underrated. Absolutely shit hot guitar player, who for some reason spent almost his entire career (Dio aside) sat on his arse doing fuck all.

Can't stand Rage Against The Machine. Dog shit Nu Metal band, ridiculously untalented musicians. In reality, they should be spoken about in the same breath as Limp Bizkit or another one of those pisstake bands. Awful.

I couldn't really take all the big hair, spandex and slap pantomime seriously.
I suppose, arguably, heavy metal begins here...

Not sure Lightning Bolt are very metal. Here's a S-o-T Grindcore jab in the ear for you. My mates, Krupskaya, they love them in Russia and the Baltics. Their first album, on release was heavily bootlegged in the Ukraine, apparently. {I 'played' on it.} Krupskaya.

Criminal that Thin Lizzy haven't been mentioned yet. Here's thunder and lightning from their final album with Phil Lynott. Supposedly, Phil was snorting so much coke, he couldn't breath through his nose which gave the raspy distortion to his voice. Truly an epic metal track. A very young John Sykes plays a blistering solo on this one too.

I think Ride The Lightning was voted greatest metal album ever in Kerrang? As much as I love Master Of Puppets and it is lauded by many as their best , I think Lightning is at least as good. They really are the worlds most idle band though aren't they LOL. 8 years nearly since the last studio album and no guarantee that they will get the new one out this year. There was 5 bloody years between the last album and the one before it too! Metallica vs Maiden is a tough one; I think Maiden may not have hit the heights of Metallica, neither have they plumbed the depths either so in some ways Id take Maiden over them I always hated the And Justice For All album, mainly due to production issues but this has got me really into it, its remixed so you can hear the bass (think you can use Guitar Hero to do this) It is Jason Newsted's original basslines as well Enjoy! Much as I love Metallica I've never, however, been much of an acolyte of Hammett's playing style thinking many of his solo's feel shoe-horned in and consist of speed for speeds sake, but his soloing and phrasing throughout Ride The Lightning represents his finest hour IMHO.The outro solo on Fade to black makes buying the album worthwhile alone.

Hammett is a terrible guitarist. Let's be honest, Metallica musically are bang average. Lars is a very poor drummer. Hetfield is a great rhythm player but hardly a stunning musician. Rob is a horrible bassist imo.

My missus son said to me the other day " why do u like heavy metal it's just rhhaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh all the way through" lol. That's exactly how I use to think when I was 12. Love old school metal such as maiden, sabbath and metallica but I love nu-metal better than anything (probably in the minority here), fave bands are slipknot and korn. saw them both 12 months ago at the echo arena, loved every second!

We used to take the piss out of Suicidal Tendencies at college. We used to call them the Winger of thrash metal, but I've always thought this was a great song.

Lights, Camera, Revolution is a top quality album and I'm sure they opened up Clash of The Titans tour were miles better than Slayer and Testament

Suicidal Tendencies were ace! Not heard anything by them though in the last 20 years. They put out an album around 94 that was just awlful; ott swearing and just boring musically. it killed them off for me. Would love to revisit IF they were still doing something of the standards before 94
Here's a good un from 86
And a decent cover of it by Hatebreed
One from 1988
And a good one from 1990
Amusing to see Rob Trujillo of Metallica on this (think someone said earlier they didn't rate him??)
