I have watched Stoke through the good times, the bad times, and now the good times again. Seeing Stoke in the good times again, wasn't something that I ever expected to see again.
I think that the biggest difference now, watching the good times again, is the fans.
I am as disappointed today as any fan not to have seen my team win the match today. BUT
I spent time this evening thinking about those old good times - we lost games on many occasions! I tried to remember what happened on those days when we (fans) went back into the Vic (pub), or the Club. Did we ever stand there supping our ale and saying Hudson was total shite today? Greenhoff was shite? Shilton or Banks need shooting, he/they should have saved that shot. I could go through all of the team that played in those days.
No we didn't! We were as gutted then as fans are today, but we were supporters of our team. We supped some more ale, and looked forwards to the next match. Our heroes were still out heroes, and anyone that said that they were crap or shite would need to be able to defend themselves.
Call yourselves fans?

Are you saying that if Alan Hudson had a bad game, nobody would ever say he had a bad game?
Even if he did?
Mental.

Rose coloured specs im afraid , Greenhoff for one took terrible stick from Stoke fans for a lot of the time he was here . Dobinf another , John Ritchie another . Actually I think it was in the darkest times that the true hard core came through and possibly seasons 1 and. 2 in the premier league but we had as many fickle followers in the past as we do now .

Mmm, having thought a bit more ....
My father in law (God rest his soul) once left the club and shouted to Shilton, "Ay up Pete, save us a seat, I'll be back in an hour - if you can"
But my father in law (God rest his soul) was a sarky old git.

Rubbish mate. Chapman got dogs abuse despite going on to a career with better clubs. if you are a striker at Stoke then you take a risk. Then you've got the midfielders and defenders. Thats football supporters for you

I only ever remember us losing when the other team were
1 Jammy Bar Stewards
2 The Long Legged Bar Steward dressed in black was on their side.
Perhaps the glasses are tinted and the memories faded , but I doubt we ever gave a team riddled with injuries with a young keeper a hard time for drawing a game. If we had lost 5 -0 then it would have been the Manager who got the stick not the players.

I think if we had pissed a 2-0 lead up the wall in a very winnable home game in the final 20 minutes like we did today we would have moaned our bags off just the same, only difference is we didn't have the internet to do it on, it was either the pub of the Sentinel letters page.

Worst player I ever saw in a Stoke shirt as a full back. Up there with some of the best from the moment he moved into the centre.

Back in the day though when we had a good moan & slagged players off it was only our mates and those around us that got to hear it, today everyone's rants go public for the world to read on forums such as this, twitter & facebook etc.
Don't think the moaning has got any worse its just more folk have access to it

I think that's the key difference. It's so easy to instantly criticise, even abuse, players ( and fellow fans), to a wide audience these days. The Sentinel letters page would not have printed some of the comments/language posted on the internet and social media.

Everyones entitled to an opinion I posted a thread yesterday about how the club was in a good place and immediately got a response of !!!!!!!!!!'s and ???????'s. One thing we can all agree on is that the club is definitely in a good place, it's in Stoke.

Is it more prevalent now because of social media?
In the old days the idiot would be told to shut up and have another pint. He invariably would else he'd get another whack from 'dirty Barry', just like he did last week.
Nowadays they have internet anonymity and carry on regardless.
The support at the ground is similar. Not too much difference I feel.

It's like you can feel the posters shouting at you because they don't agree, I don't want to sound excessively virtuous, which I'm not, but I always try to work to the principle of not saying anything on social media that I wouldn't say using exactly the same language to someone's face, and never to swear or use foul language, either in person or on social media. It all comes from my father, who always used to say, if you're in the right you can afford to be civil, if you're in the wrong, you're a fool to be anything else

My late Dad was a severe critic of Peter Shilton when he was signed. Always a great admirer of John Farmer he thought the money was wasted on Shilts. Standing in the Boothen End one Satureday as the teams entered the pitch Shilton gave his usual wave to the fans on the terraces. Dad's response......."there he goes agen feeling for the goal posts. He's blind as a bat yer know" .

Not too much difference I feel. Anonymity is certainly part of it, in my view. When I first started using this Board I had a different username, but I when I asked myself why I wasn't just using my name, I couldn't convince myself of a good reason so I changed. I think it helps to impose some personal discipline, because anything I write on here is seen by my family and friends to come from me, although I know that's it's part of the internet culture to have more exciting usernames and I'm just a boring old man
