Captains. Where are our Bryan Robson, Terry Butcher, Stuart Pearce, Tony Adams types? Old school yes but we don't seem to have an imposing, leader style player now. To be fair we were just as wank when those lot played for us

Gary Cahill is captaining his country for the 2nd time. The England team becomes more laughable with each "get together". Surprised its not sick note Wilshere

We didn't exactly pull up any trees with those players though did we? If it wasn't for Italia 90, I doubt any of them would be given the time of day. They were an embarrassment in 1988 and 1992 and didn't even qualify for the 1994 World Cup. What we really lack is quality.

Got a feeling this might be one of the better 'friendlies' to watch as us v the Krauts has always had an edge, a few who are starting tonight have a point to prove and woy to impress prior to the final euro squad selection so well worth a watch in my opinion

Any oatcakers going, if so, and you there already, what is security like and is it a concern an old stoker mate off the Rothesay has gone over yesterday, doesn't seem to concerned. I flew back from Dublin on Wednesday, security was still the same, and then one of a group of drunk Germans was getting searched after tyhe scanner, and his mates started to get phones out to photograph it, I was nearly knocked over when a guard pounced on him, some fookin idiots about.

Feel for those who work in pubs (like myself) while the game's on tonight.
Remember to don't act like a twat and remember that we only have John Smiths Cask, not smooth, for the 5th time.

To be fair we were just as wank when those lot played for us 1982 we went to Spain as genuine contenders with Robson and Butcher in the team. Beat a quality France team comfortably in the group, they went on to be robbed of a place in the final by a particularly cynical German team and some shockingly incompetent/corrupt refereeing. We went out unbeaten, having held Germany to a stalemate and been unable to convert numerous chances against Spain. We haven't always been bang average despite what many people keep saying...

We've had good players in the past just like we have now but we haven't really threatened to win anything for years. We went out of the 1982 World Cup without scoring a goal in the second group stage, that was pretty underwhelming for a team who were "genuine contenders" as you put it. We've been the epitome of bang average ever since I started watching football in the late 70's and for a country with a rich footballing tradition as ours we have massively under performed on the world stage since 1966.

Ussr reached two Euro finals and a European semi. Belgium made a World semi and a Euro final. That is only looking at European middle ranking sides.

The semis wasn't the achievement it is now. Although we did reach them. Same as Wales overlook going a long way in 1976.

Not if they disagreed with me they weren't. I thought we wete at the time but I was 13!!☺ I was 20 and genuinely thought we had a chance. I still feel the pain. Germany shouldn't even have got out the group yet somehow made it to the final. Maybe memory plays tricks, but I seem to remember we outplayed Spain, had a number of clear chances but couldn't stick it in the net.
