MOM But part of the reason we are so slow at home. The manager is the reason we are so slow at home.

Imbula was getting stick for some of his passing but at least he was trying to get it forward, and not just playing the easy balls, so they go astray sometimes but if you always play safe we won't get anywhere.. Affelay is a good player but we do need to get the midfield working together better

Yep top player - my player of the season
I think the rivalry with Bojan is as much tactical as anything. Bojan is a forward who drops deep to pick up the ball. Affellay is a midfielder who goes forward to support the attack. it looks similar - but whereas you'd expect Bojan to find himself in more goal scoring positions (he looks the better finisher) you'd expect Affelay breaking up play in midfield more (he is far the better tackler). I think Hughes will alternate depending on the opposition and the state of the game.
Affelay's partnership with Imbula looks really promising - they already look on the same wavelength and seem prepared to cover for each other when one of them ventures forward.
Not a great perforamnce yesterday but still glimpses of an even more promosing future.
And now to put REM's "Happy Shiny People" for a little clap along.... :-)

In the number 10 position, I think Bojan is a lot more direct than Afellay. Bojan looks to dribble forwards, and although he may get shrugged off the ball, he still tries to create something. He makes runs in behind the defence and thus creates space for others. Afellay is a different sort of payer. Passes it from side to side very well, works harder and keeps us ticking along. But he just doesn't 'create' enough. EDIT: To be fair to Afellay, he created 3 chances yesterday and got the assist (I think it was him?). He also had a 96% pass completion rate!

Whelan created 4 I can't remember 4 chances we had

What a absolute amazing player!! Unbelieveble that there are still guy's that have doubts about him or compare him to Bojan......omg!!!!! I am from the Netherlands and have seen both of them play and despite me being a Ajax fan, I must admitt that Afellay is really a cracking player!! Bojan is not even alowed to carry his bag!! This season is almost finished and after another year the lad will be a free agent. A bloody shame the club still did not extand his contract by two or three years!!!

Your edit summed it up for me. I think we do him a disservice by saying he slows play down; sometimes, maybe, but he is incredible in possession, made so many great passed yesterday, and is one of only two or three players we have who can whip dangerous balls into the box. Fantastic footballer.

Didn't think Butland covered himself in glory yesterday especially the second goal.......and Shawcross seemed to be at right back more than centre half......he should not be drawn out of the middle so often and he should have been given the job of marking Pelle....sort it out Mark........

Sorry but that is just nonsense to say that Bojan is not the same league as Affelay shows a distinct lack of footballing knowledge.

Tidy player but plays too many passes sideways for me which helps to slow things down....like to see more penetrating forward balls from him to be honest....and more shots on target would be a bonus..........

I would like him to see playing the ball more forward as well, but if you watch the lad playing he is always looking for the possibilty to pass forwards, but you cant blame him though. The only player last game that was "availble" for him was arni (goal). The rest was hiding or loosing the bal to easy. If we would have had a real number 9 who has the abillity to keep the ball en score goals we would have been playing for positio 3 to 5.

Steadiest player all season. I'm "steady" at work. Ibi has been by no means "steady" this season. Just hope my management never find out just how steady I actually am!!!

I'm sure he was the first one to try a low pacey cross into the box rather than lofting it for van dijk to head

Affelay is a good player but we do need to get the midfield working together better Imbula didn't have many options with regards to forward passing, so resorted to chipping the ball forward, which proved fruitless.

It'll be interesting to see if Hughes decides to stick Afellay out wide meaning Bojan comes back in the team or Walters comes in leaving Afellay in a position he's been playing well in for a few weeks.. hmm.

Good in many ways but always has to look around to assure himself when he passes, a reason our play is slow.

Deserves a song to say the least. Have we got one for him? If not, then Leicester's Drinkwater song to our Begovic tune just reminded me of one:
"Here's to you, Ibi Afellay, City loves you more than you will know" etc.

Wonder if he'd work as the middle focal point of a front three.
Whelan Imbula Bojan Walters Afellay Arnautovic
Afellay is less liable to a fluff. Likes getting stuck in too. Not shy of heading it.
Better at running the channels than all but Diouf perhaps.
A way of fitting in Bojan, Afellay and Imbula.
Just a thought. Afellay is outstanding. Dropping him would be daft.
