Very difficult for anyone in our team to cross successfully when we've only ever got one man, at most, in the box. Even less when that man is Walters. What are shaqiri's crossing stats? Not much better I wouldn't have thought. Shaqiri put 4 or 5 belters in the first half. In swinging to the far post. Nobody attacking them. So the stats say that his success rate was zero which is pretty much my point. Statistically none of our players can cross a ball because good or bad, no fucker is ever there to get on the end of them. We simply don't get enough men in the box to make crossing a successful art form for us. When we do get one in, its invariably Walters who pretty much stands stationary in the middle of the goal. He rarely attacks front or back post.

That said, I think you are being a little harsh on SJW, he made a number of good runs against Newcastle, but often the cross is under or over hit. Our game set up doesn't seem to allow for us getting more men in the box and I think that is the key problem. Whoever our striker is, if he is constantly the only person to hit, it makes it difficult for him and the crosser and easy for the defender. That said, another poster said SJW made the same run on a number of occasions, which I would agree with, surely this must be part of a tactical plan, therefore, surely the crosses should have been aimed for his run rather than just whipped into the box at random?

Agree that it would be good to see Diouf get a run up front. He finished the season really well last season when we were on fire, be good to see that again. Shame for Joselu as I'd like to see him get a run as well but with the system we play not going to happen. Walters should definitely be benched after Wednesday he was really poor....

While the end product still lacked the required quality, it was great to see Pieters working well down the left side yesterday. He rally got a head of steam up on a couple of occasions.
He was handed the captaincy when Whelan went off; a nice finishing touch to another day at the office.
