Butland Johnson Shawcross Wollscheid Pieters Whelan Imbula Afellay Shaqiri Bojan Arnautovic
or
Butland Johnson Shawcross Wollscheid Pieters Whelan Imbula Shaqiri Bojan/Afellay Arnautovic Joselu/Diouf
The 4-2-3-1 formation is really quite difficult to fully nail down with a concrete 11; Boj at his best is a shoe-in, but Afellay offers so much. Diouf/Joselu depending on form and the opposition.
Maybe a 4-4-2 as well: Butland Johnson Shawcross Wollscheid Pieters Shaqiri Imbula Whelan Arnautovic Diouf Joselu
Would take some work to implement + discipline would be key re: Shaq and Arnie in terms of beating their man and effective crosses, but could offer a solid alternative, especially given the power and ability of Imbula.

After SJW's performance on Saturday, he has cemented his place as lone striker until the end of the season. Incredibly, the Daily Mail match report compared him to Pele and Neymar. "But the changes backfired when Stoke scored two goals in three minutes. The first, on 52 minutes, was a flowing counter, Glenn Whelan playing a ball down the right flank for Jonathan Walters. The striker performed the sweetest of skills, deceiving defender Steve Cook without even touching the ball, feinting to cut inside then allowing it to run down the flank. Cook gave a groan. Pele pulled off the greatest of these moves against Uruguay in the 1970 World Cup, beating goalkeeper Ladislao Mazurkiewicz before missing an open goal. Neymar executed another for Barcelona a few years back, but was brutally taken out. Walters went one better and passed into Afellay, who buried a first-time shot into the right of goal" Do you ghost write a column for the Mail March?

When they have played a few games together it will be difficult to find a better centre partner for inbula than Whelan imo. I suspect Glenn will be first choice for his role next season as well. They will work well as a pair imo

They will work well as a pair imo Spot on but I can see us trying to get a younger version in, but if that doesn't happen the only person that should be partnering Imbula is Whelan, he'll give him the freedom to get forward when he can, which is why its madness there's so many teams in this thread without him.

9 of the 11 are clear cut for me with only 2 positions left for Bojan, Affellay, Joselu, Diouf, Walters. Muni and Geoff great bench options along with 3 of those 5 above. Thinking on... This may have something to do with the Diouf/Bojan thing mind... Blown.....

Butland
Johnson Shawcross Wolly Pieters
Whelan Imbula
Shaqiri Affelay Arnie
Walters
Thats the team that I think Hughes will go for the rest of the season with Cameron coming in for the injured Johnson.
Its pretty hard to argue too.

Loads of options in the squad.... We rarely finish games in the same shape as how we start them.
Rotational, they're already on the beach trying stuff out.
Option Uno. The 'Beat em Up for them that sits back'.
-----------------Butland----------------- --------Bardsley Shawcross Pieters--------- ------Johnson Whelan Imbula Arnautovic---- ------------------Bojan------------------- --------------Walters Joselu--------------
Dos. The 'Scare and confuse, then head them to death'.
-----------------Butland------------------ -------Cameron Wollscheid Muniesa---------- -----Walters Afellay Imbula Shaqiri------- ----------------Ireland------------------- --------------Diouf Crouch----------------
Tres..
A take on the '4-3-3, best use of inverted wingers with a mobile middle man up front'.
----------------Butland-------------------- ---Johnson Shawcross Wollscheid Pieters----- ----------------Whelan---------------------- -----------Afellay---Imbula-------------- --------Shaqiri Joselu Arnautovic-----------
option Quatro..
The 'Carol Vorderman'.

It's Hard not picking a striker but then who do you drop? And who do you start? Joselu? I tried to put all of our best players in the team. It's tough this management lark!
Butland Johnson Shawcross Woolschied Pieters Whelan Affelay Imbula Shaqiri Affelay Arnautovic Bojan I like this, because I think we benefit as a team having Whelan sitting deep, and the only other alternative is having Imbula sit deep. Now, having seen him driving forward and setting himself up with a goal doing so I don't want to see him sitting deep and also is that not one of the reasons he wanted out from Porto, cos they were playing him as deep, holding-midfielder?... We don't want to upset our record signing by playing him in an unfavourable position

Butland
Johnson Shawcross Wollscheid Pieters
Cameron Imbula
Shaqiri Bojan Arnautovic
Then I just cannot decide who the forward should be. Nobody has really grabbed the opportunity & cemented the position as their own. You could argue for any of the forwards starting, depending on the opposition

This team I picked first (with a variation on Affelay dropping deeper) seems to be the most popular formation and team thus far from peoples posts
4-2-3-1
-------Jack-------- Glen-Ryan-Phil-Erik ---Imbula Affellay--- Shaq--Bojan---Arnie ------Joselu-------
Will put together some graphics of the most popular choices late next week when folk have had their say!
None of it is the say Glenns days are numbered, there will always be a need to play him in some games, but IF everyone was fit this seems like the next evolution, especially at home.
But as people have said, its a squad game, there would be rotation, Geoff Cam/SJW etc would all have roles to play in games as subs to see games out/chase games etc.
However I do fail to see a long term place (alas) for Crouchy, Adam and Diouf if all available - which is a shame as I like the guys.

It's a toughie.
But, gun to my head, I'm in the camp that can see Whelan starting whenever he's fit to balance things up.
Which presumably means, it could well be an Afellay (who's playing very well) v Bojan (with a 4-yr big bucks contract in his pocket) shootout for most games?

Maybe Glenn will thrive having another ball winner near him too. That ball to set Walters free on Saturday was a beauty.
Great squad with lots of options. At the moment, he has the luxury of bringing on Bojan when the game is stretched. Alternatively Afellay can cover both centre mid and all 3 attacking midfield positions. Been a great signing.

Interesting that there's nearly unanimous agreement on the goalkeeper and back four, but hardly any agreement in front of them. We certainly have some good players but no real idea how to get the best out of them. Despite signing players who improve the squad, we seem to have gone backwards since our excellent form at the end of last season. It really is time that the manager and coaches decided what system and style they want to play and stuck with it. They could then buy players to fit into the system rather than the random policy which we seem to have now.
