Can't find a decent live version. Just about everyone covered this:-
Mr. Fantasy. A later line up from line up from '72:-

Skank, slightly away from traffic, have you seen the vid of Stevie Winwood doing a solo acoustic version of 'Can't find my way home'? On you tube and beautifully performed

I'd like to hear some of the Grateful Dead's stuff if anyone has any favourites. They have passed me by somewhat and I have a spare CD shelf!
As did Colosseum. I remember they were massive at the time and I appreciated the musicianship but I never really got into them. I'm ready to be enlightened!

I still have the original Album with the topless girl holding a plane on the cover , I'm not sure but I think they had to change it as it was a bit naughty even for the 70s

She was about 13 and the 'sculpture' she holds is clearly phallic. The permissive society, sexual identity and much more were clearly in a state of flux during that era. It's easy to condemn with hindsight. And of course, the ultimate defence is 'it's Art'

The only band I can remember hearing was Mungo Jerry. We didn't stay long,we weren't really into rock music at that time.

I've just read on wiki, that the Free song 'Highway song', is about Highway Farm. This was a holding area for the bands adjacent to the festival site. Is the modern festival held on the same site too? I may well get my maps out and plan a walk around the festival site, hopefully pick up some vibes from 1970

Sorry for the crappy Sentnull website.
I'm not sure Highway Farm still exists. In any event, it would be over beyond the A525 Keele Bypass from the festival site. Highway Lane runs off Station Road Keele.
The festival was in the land way up behind Leycett Recycling Centre and Park Site. It would likely be accessible from Hollywood Lane, off B5044 Pepper Street or from Agger Hill or possibly Station Drive both off the A525. It's 40 years since I've been up that way so I may be wrong! I'm pretty sure you can see it from the satellite view on Google maps.
P.S. Highway Song is in me OP.

We can hardly have a thread about a '70s Rock Festival without a drum solo can we? And seeing as the master is available...

Not that this relates to the music but I used to know the farmer 'farmer Ted', sadly passed on now, and he told me a bit of his story about the festival. He kept pigs and took any left over food from the uni for them and that's how contact was made with the students and they suggested a festival on his land. Like any farmer, if there was a few quid in it he was up for it. He was due to be paid in stage payments one before and one after ( I think) the festival. There is a story around Madeley that he lost money but that is not the whole story. He got the prepayment but not the one after and went down to London to try and get paid but just got fobbed off. So he went to the solicitors and they said to impound all the fencing that was left and write to them and if they didn't pay he would sell it. No reply and so he sold it and made a handsome profit. He kept the money that was owed to him and wrote several times to ask where to send the money; no reply after a year and so one final letter, no reply and so he got to keep that as well!

An excellent bit of local history capto. Thanks for posting! I'm glad everything worked out well for Ted in the end. Everybody I've spoken to who went to the festival had a really good time. Nobody has ever had a bad word to say.

Screaming Lord Sutch: Shock Rock like that of Alice Cooper, Marilyn Manson, GWAR, Slipknot or whoever is turning your stomach these days had to start somewhere. This guy and the likes of Screamin' Jay Hawkins and a couple of others are the originals.
Sutch started off in the tender care of genius/maniac Joe Meek and Ritchie Blackmore was a long time early band member. He did produce a terrible album called "Lord Sutch and Heavy Friends" which featured the likes of Jimmy Page, John Bonham, Jeff Beck, Noel Redding and Nicky Hopkins but neither they nor the rumoured Peter Green, Eric Clapton etc. turned up for this gig. By the mid seventies Sutch was concentrating on his political projects.
IMHO none of the contemporary Sutch material stands up to this early classic from 1964.

I suppose these boys were influenced by Lord Sutch's act to some degree.

Actual Hollywood Festival Footage!
Grateful Dead
That's a terrific vid Skank. It gives a real taste of the Hollywood 70 experience. It's hard to believe that piece of youth/Rock culture happened right on our doorstep. The footage reminded me a little of Granada TVs 'Stones in the park'. It's a damn shame and a missed opportunity that it didn't become an annual event, after all Pilton Pop started that year and look at that now!
