....and an old one.
Funeral for a friend, Love lies bleeding, Candle in the wind, Bennie and the Jets pretty much a perfect side of vinyl.

he has been pinching a living off the back a couple of so so hits for the past 40 years. knighted for services to himself Amazing how far a couple of hits can stretch these days.
Sir Elton Hercules John, CBE (born Reginald Kenneth Dwight, 25 March 1947)[1][3] is an English singer-songwriter, composer and pianist. He has worked with lyricist Bernie Taupin as his songwriting partner since 1967; they have collaborated on more than 30 albums to date. In his five-decade career Elton John has sold more than 300 million records, making him one of the best-selling music artists in the world.[4][5] He has more than fifty Top 40 hits, including seven consecutive No. 1 US albums, 58 Billboard Top 40 singles, 27 Top 10, four No. 2 and nine No. 1. For 31 consecutive years (1970–2000) he had at least one song in the Billboard Hot 100. His single "Candle in the Wind 1997" sold over 33 million copies worldwide and is the best-selling single in the history of the UK and US singles charts.[6][7][8] He has also composed music, produced records, and has occasionally acted in films. John owned Watford Football Club from 1976 to 1987, and 1997 to 2002. He is an honorary Life President of the club, and in 2014 had a stand named after him at the club's home stadium.
I suspect his knighthood was as much to do with his stand on Aids as the music. Not to forget the Grammies, Oscars, Brit awards etc.

They used to do a series of summer concerts on the dock at Liverpool in a big top and I remember seeing him there he was excellent but he has a knack of surrounding himself with a decent band.

His stand on aids ....didn't that come after years of denying he was gay, including a sham marriage ?... but hey ho, I don't like him, you do, that's fair enough.

Back in the day and I'm sure you'll remember there were no careers for gays in music in fact he was probably one of the first to be openly gay. It's a music thread no more no less.

Interestingly the same Tom Robinson who went on to marry and have kids. Now I thought he was a man with a couple of hits but I'd forgotten the excellent War baby. At least having failed to have a music career he went on to find a decent music station
Renata wasn't the old fraud's first attempt at marriage. His career started in 1968 the year after homosexuality ceased to be a crime in Britain. That issue together with the drugs and eating disorders presumably fucked up his decision making for a fair amount of his life so I won't judge him for any of his choices in life. I'm sure his ex wife knew what she was doing he came out as bisexual in 1976.
Anyway I'll buy you and your friend a drink next time I see you

Fair enough, not sure who the friend is you are referring to but I'll take a drink with almost anyone ...you're obviously an intelligent fellow albeit with an appalling taste in music... we could have a discussion on the honours system. I wasn't singling Elton out on that front, Most other knighthoods (especially pop stars)are given to people for services to themselves imo. The system is shite. If you think Sir Elton should be honoured to the same level as Sir Winston Churchill or Sir Isaac Newton or Sir Time Berners-Lee (I could go on) it would be a interesting debate. I'll continue turning off the radio whenever one of his dirges comes on, listening would be too much of a sack-er-riff-ice

Maybe not like the person - a lot of stars need egos the size of a planet to make it - but as I've got older I do quite like a lot of his songs; just my opinion of course.

I'll continue turning off the radio whenever one of his dirges comes on, listening would be too much of a sack-er-riff-ice If I've got you right you sat three places to my left at the Porto match in Cologne the day Imbula destroyed us I was there with my lad. We were stuck either side of a very nice young man .....and his father
I didn't bring the honours system up you did but what it's worth I think it's a load of toss used mainly by self serving politicians and the like who presumably at some point think that a knighthood or whatever might be a vote winner. If merit came anywhere near the equation then Gordon Banks would have been knighted.
As for my appalling taste in music I listened to Elton John mainly when he was relevant in the 1970s although his success went on beyond that. The early albums like Tumbleweed Connection and Madman across the water were fresh and different and his early reputation was built on being a decent musician. Like most people my musical tastes have changed over the years my lad's recent complaint was that I was too "Indie".
I put the thread up because I heard him on 6Music flogging the new stuff and thought it would make a change having a thread about the living for a change. I misjudged the board unless of course it's too uncool to admit liking the odd Elton John song

You're confused!, I was indeed there, but a nice young man - I wish! - I was born in 1961. And by the end of the 70's I was travelling around to see live bands such as the clash, killing joke, stiff little fingers, siouxsie and the banshees, the jam etc, in small venues... which was way more exciting than sitting in row z waving a candle at some fat bloke playing a piano in the far distance, maybe you should have tried it

It's a decent choice of bands and I've bought albums by four of the five mentioned. I'll put you a tune up on another thread. It would be a shame to waste it on here.
