"Their job"? Are you just fishing for an argument here? The day you start paying to use the site is the day you can spout this kind of nonsense. Do you seriously think people have time to sift through EVERY single thread to find the things you disagree with? I swear to god I despair of this place and the indignant entitlement attitude of some of the posters. Hand on heart, I wish I'd never wasted my fucking time and I feel genuinely sorry for those who give freely of their time thanklessly trying to keep several thousand posters and many different opinions in order. 20 years down the pan. If it's not 'their' job then who's job is it? If you're not going to do it properly (when you're online) then don't be an Admin in the first place. ...and it's not things 'I' disagree with so don't put words into my mouth. It's the lack of basic common sense or knowing what is or isn't allowed that pisses me off. The recent racist thread is a example of Admin being online and posting on a thread that shouldn't even have been there in the first place, rather than stopping it dead as soon as it was highlighted. And don't give this sifting through 'thousands' of posts bullshit. If there's something that shouldn't be there it's pretty easy to identify by peoples reactions and gets highlighted. I'd quite happily take on responsibility as an admin. It's nobody's "job". It's an utterly thankless task undertaken by people for no reward whatsoever, with nothing but abuse from people. Even the merger thing was just one moderator seeking if they could tidy things up. It wasn't what posters wanted and it was stopped after about 3 days. It wasn't a conspiracy to annoy poor old you, or anybody else for that matter. And I'm afraid that sometimes it is just the things which people disagree with which irks them. Every single subject has dozens of opinions and those who moderate the board don't always have the time to go through every post on a thread to uncover the nuances of angle from which posters are coming, Sometimes it's just a case of seeing something and trying to do the right thing quickly. And sometimes people make mistakes. I don't know where your anger comes from or where you get the idea that this place is turning to shit? It's how it's always been - moderators trying to keep everybody happy (and ban as few people as possible) and posters moaning about their own perceived grievances. I came close to winding all this up in about 2006 and I actually wish I had done. It's just become a gladiators arena with Stokies abusing each other's, posters acting in a way which would see them getting their lights punched out if they did it in public and incessant moaning and trolling. Set up your own board mate and show us how it's done. I'm not goading you - it's a genuine wish. I'd come and use it and would relish the opportunity to just be able to post in peace.

There are a lot of trolls about, but equally Football is so subjective that one person can think a player had a nightmare when the fan next to him think he has played well...
... it's a funny old game.

Anyway, thanks for your input.

I've been a "lurker" since the late '90s, and the thing that has kept me reading has been the passion of our supporters, and the interesting, often heated debates that people have engaged in. The problem is that in recent years, more and more "discussions" have degenerated into slanging matches or cock measuring contests. (NB: I've been watching Stoke for over 25 years, the old bloke behind me has "served" over 70 years- am I a 'JCL'!? With two small kids I can't go to away games like I'd want to- am I less of a supporter now than I used to be when I was young, free and single and went everywhere with SCFC?)
In real life, I talk to people about football, Stoke City, politics or whatever and listen to what people have to say- sometimes I stand my ground, and sometimes I'll amend my opinions based on the conversation. On here, a very vocal minority of posters appear to just want to prove themselves right all the time. The thing is, we're talking football- it's something we spend lots of money on because we love it, it makes us happy (Even when it makes us sad). Stoke City has been an oasis in the darkest moments of my life- the death of parents etc but Christ almighty, some people on here spread such negativity- maybe they need to remember what the message board is for- a vehicle to discuss our shared love- Stoke City.
Ultimately a board like this works best when people self moderate and censorship strips away some of that passion. There are a number of posters who need to take a good long look in a mirror and ask themselves whether they really find posting on the oatcake fun any more

Whilst not my intention to stir up a hornets nest there have been some great points raised by the responses. I agree that the obvious way to deal with trolls is to simply ignore them, for the most part I have done this (not a massive poster anyway, more of a reader), it just irks me so much that after such a great performance in a rare but very important match we get some people trying to put the boot in. Starting a thread whilst semi drunk is also never a great starting point as I tend to find being far more wound up. I will endeavour to ignore the WUMs in future. Palarse 0- Stoke 2 early prediction.

It is a shame people like Franklin and mumf no longer post on here. I know Franklin took umbrage over personal abuse. I have the feeling mumf just got bored by the negative comments from those who "tell it like it is" without any qualification to do so. But as many people have said, these people are simply seeking attention and it is best to ignore them. They have no credibility. They think they do but one only has to look at what they post to realize that they are delusional. For example "What is the purpose of Afellay being on the pitch?" said one a few weeks ago. And the same poster seldom posts after Stoke have won to give credit or praise when it is due. No, it is all about schoolboy errors and how Hughes, the coaching staff and the club have got it all totally wrong. It reminds of the George Burns joke: "Isn't it a damn shame that the people who really know how to run the country are all working as hairdressers and cab drivers."

Foster, just asking politely mate but do you go on many other football message boards?
I do, and I've got to say (apart from the recent spate of over zealous thread merging, which now seems to have thankfully abated) I think the Oatcake is one of the best moderated sites out there.
I can only talk about the main board because I spend very little time on the EE board but on here, they really do get the balance just right.
The mods give up their time for free and like you, they have full time commitments also.
Obviously it would be impossible for them to open every thread, just out of interest, do you get in touch with Admin yourself if you see something that you don't feel is appropriate on here?

There are certain rules for certain posters and at least one admin isn't averse to a bit of trolling himself!

Paul, - I don't as I support Stoke and have no interest in other teams - I appreciate the mods use their free time but it's not the time or resources that I'm talking about. It's how it's moderated.... I have the impression that some admin do not know themselves what constitutes racism or inciting hatred. - I have gotten in touch with Admin before, yes. End of discussion from me. F.

I dont think the admins are too blame but more that theres 4 or 5 over-zealous posters on here with deep-entrenched views that they repeat over and over again and bring intelligent discussions down to peurile idiocy by heaping the attention on themselves.
The vast majority of posters sit somewhere in the middle and are a pleasure to discuss Stoke issues one way or the other. The truth is never black & white in the real world.
Theres not many of them but Benji is far from the only one on this messageboard

I've followed Stoke for some 53 years but I've only been posting on here for the last few years. Mainly because I had no interest in either the internet or message boards prior to that. I discovered the Oatcake through a friend and I've hardly stopped posting since. It has been an absolute pleasure bantering with Stoke fans from all over the globe on here and, even when certain subject have become a little 'overheated' it usually ends in a vitual handshake and an agreement to disagree. I'm beginning to wonder about just how bored I must have been before the Oatcake and it's always great to drift in and out, catching up with the current conversations. What I'm saying mate is, you had a great idea all those years ago and that still holds true today. This board provides a great deal of pleasure to a great many fans and you have certainly not "wasted 20 years". It has its imperfections of course but I, for one, am extremely grateful that it's here and long may it remain.
