Yes the number 1 is a strange choice and no Smithy but David Batty in there is just wrong!

Billy Bremner wasn't the hardest player in that Leeds side, never mind the hardest in football.
David Batty? Vinny Jones?
Kenny Burns was mental and rock hard as was his partner in crime Larry Lloyd.
Denis Smith and Alan Bloor shit all over Roy Keane.

Duncan Forbes, Graeme Souness, Smithy. Alan Hansen..... not an obvious pick but make no mistake Hansen was as hard as they come. Jimmy Case Alan Macdonald Mick Harford.

Maurice Setters and Eddie Clamp but my old man reckoned Charlie Scrimshaw from the mid 1930s team was the hardest player he'd ever seen.

There will be loads of names missing.
Honourable Stokie mentions. Sergie, Wilko, Fuller, Ade, Whelan etc.
Big Dunc would destroy Keane. No one mixes it with big Dunc.

Can't argue with that, Bremner together with Hunter and Giles were an evil bunch in that Leeds side. Just think they make our current 'hard man' Charlie Adam look like a right nancy boy.

Most of those weren't so much hard as just flat out dirty, especially Bremner and Giles, nasty specimens. Typical dirty little mid-field players that couldn't tackle. Nobby Stiles was in the same class. After big Denis, the hardest players I ever saw in the 60s and 70s were Tommy Smith, Norman Hunter and Chopper Harris. I lived in Bristol for a while and watched Bristol City for while...Norman Hunter ended his career there and i learned a greater appreciation of how good a player he was.

I played against Kenny Burns in a Sunday league football match in the mid-nineties and it was a scary prospect. He still had that fear factor about him and it was a daunting task. He was a right unit !!

Neil Aspin was quietly hard when he played for Vale. In a good way too. Decent player.

Roy Keane is a joke. I remember a few years ago watching Leeds Rhinos v Bradford Bulls on TV, in the crowd was Roy Keane, the commentator said " There are a few players on the pitch today who wouldn't fancy playing against him"...Yeah right...they'd destroy him, mind you, even the team mascot would...

Following the logic of those photographs, Dave MacKay should be the hardest man. The No 1 "hard man", Billy Bremner, is visibly shitting himself as MacKay grabs him. As others have said, a distinction must be made between hard and nasty. The nasty men tend to choose soft targets. I recall Souness going in over the top in a tackle with Paul Richardson in a Boxing Day game against Liverpool. Souness kept well clear of Denis Smith during that game. My hero Calvin Palmer decked Tommy Smith at Anfield, so where does that place Palmer? And let's not forget Eddie Clamp. He was both hard and nasty. And also George Kinnell -- hard as nails but without the malice of lesser "hard" men.

Their justification for David Batty being a hard man was that Graham bloody-Le Saux twatted him! That's all you need to know. And Roy Keane ? It's click bait.
