Colin Jeavons -excellent as Lestrade in the Jeremy Brett versions of Sherlock Holmes. Also did a great late-career turn as Stamper in the British version (and best) of House of Cards. You could always rely on Jeavons to pop up and create a good character actor piece in great British Telly across 3 decades, like the Sweeney, The Bill and The Avengers

Great Thread. Britain produced loads of them who were never leading men but worked steadily from 50s-90s
Three more of the best (I could go on all day)
Ian Hendry - first saw him as 'pissholes in the snow' Eric in Get Carter, but he was the original avenger, even before Patrick Macnee, and he popped up in loads of stuff like McVicar and in episodes of Bergerac
Nadim Sawalha -played every type of foreigner for 30 years. Guest stars in Bergerac, The Sweeney, Space 1999 and 2 James Bond films, as well as Callan and The Professionals. Also has hot daughter. Possibly 2 depending on taste.
James Booth -loved this guy as a kid for his turn as Hooky in Zulu, and was always delighted when he livened up midweek 70s/80s telly like Minder, The Bill, and Auf Wiedersehen Pet. Bizarrely I last saw him in Twin Peaks

One more vote for Belinda Lang too, she was so so good in 2.4 Children and plenty more.

George Sewell had a long and impressive CV on TV and cinema. Michael Elphick was never short of work and made an unusual (by today's standards) lead man. Edward Woodward would be on my list just for Callan let alone all his other achievements. Del Henney was a regular face on 70s telly and always took a good part. Adam Faith excelled as Budgie, definitely a better actor than singer! Oh, and a shout for Derek Griffiths for Heads and Tails

Jeffrey Robert. Frank in Meantime. Not a TV series but was a TV film. The whole cast is great. Tim Roth, Phil Daniels ,Alfred Molina ,Gary Oldman. The comedy is bleak but so well written. You don't see much on TV like this these days, even though the times have changed, for most. Same goes for Made in Britain. Mike Leigh at his most honest best.

Trevor Eve. He seems to be getting everywhere, portrays a decent nasty gangland boss too. Bill Paterson is a ubiquitous manic jock. Ian Holm, he's a bit high profile now I s'pose. Never understood the appeal of Bill Nye, he only has one expression.

Oh, and a shout for Derek Griffiths for Heads and Tails Sewell should get plaudits for playing not only the tough guy roles which came so easily given that he knocked about in real life with East End Gangsters, but also for playing sci fi roles like UFO. I LOVED Elphick in Withnail and I, apparently the elswhere-mentioned bill nighy had a great audition for the title role but was a total piss artist, and so wasn't hired as there were already Elphick and Robinson (director) drinking the place dry every night and causing havoc. Star turn as jimmy a dad as well- The whole cast of films like quadrophenia is rich with great British character actors. I thought Faiths finest hour was as Roger Daltreys sidekick in McVicar - another cast of English greats- Billy Murray, Steven Berkoff, and Brian Hall to name but three.

Florence from The Magic Roundabout always undervalued, the hairy arsed woofer Dougal always stole the limelight from the wee lass - and don't get me started on that Baggies fan Zebedee, bag of sh*t.

A true unsung hero to me, would be Tony Beckley. His best known roles being Camp Freddie in The Italian Job, and (Dutch) Peter, the blonde assassin in Get Carter. He appeared on the best telly of the day, almost always as a villain. I always like the fact that his appearance was never the same, he never just played himself if you like, a true character actor.

Just goes to show how strongly a lot of people associate that film with Michael Caine - yes in retrospect he's above the credits. I'd put Baker in a category of under appreciated british leading film actors, James Booth as unsung British telly hero, and Robbery as one of the great hidden gems of English cinema.
