Just caught part of the interview this morning on BBC Breakfast. Interviewed about cost of tickets in Prem. Very interesting argument.
Clearly a southerner but he referred to fact that most Prem grounds are FULL each week but ATMOSPHERE is crap. e.g. Arsenal Emirates often called 'The Library'. - many old posts on here about the Brit (Chelsea LCup apart).
He compared today to 1980's when average age of fans was 18/25, today its 35/40 so suppose us old gits cant shout as much.
Also prem tickets prices maybe high are only 15% of average weekly wage. What worried me was his comment that Prem league could give ALL tickets away FREE and still make a fortune from the TV rights.
However his last comment made me think. Attendence is about COMMUNITY not 'me' 'me' 'me' I go each game not just to see my team but to meet with my mates and have a bloody good time (mostly). He said the club owners are becoming less and less close to their fans and could sit in sanitised boxes totally ignorant of any relationship with their fans. That's what happens in the USA and it worries me.

I don't have the exact fugures in front of me but Stoke's ticket income from season tickets and pay on the day tickets for home and away fans will surely be less than £15 million per year. The last set of accounts showed total income of a whisker under £100 million and when the new deal kicks in it will be £125 million ish - or more if we can finish higher up the table and improve our sponsorship and merchandising. Obviously clubs are never going to let spectators in for free but they could easily afford to reduce their prices and they could make a start by reducing the cost to away fans, most of whom who already face big additional costs for travel and because they, unlike home fans, can't watch games at the discounted season ticket price. The Bundesliga have bigger average crowds than here and part of the reason must be the ticket prices which are much less than here - and they don't even have our huge TV deal.

The golden egg will only last so long, we should expand the stadium now and build up our fan base, in the long run that is the only sure way raising income. Instead of reducing the ticket prices now, we should plow the money into the stadium, and maybe reduce prices once this is done, if the income from TV is still there.

The problem is these old buggers are the people with most of the money these days. They are on the whole the last of the old final salary index linked pension brigade with house generously appreciated and fully owned. They are cash rich and determined to find some way of unloading it. Just go to any of our airports and you can't move for these old sods wandering around, cluttering up the walkways and reception areas. It would be nice to stipulate a maximum number allowed in the ground at any given time (say 10% I don't know) but I think that would be frowned upon so unfortunately I think we are just stuck with them

At the moment we are static, how can you attract more support if there are no seats ? bum`s on seats as you say may not be important today but as you say if the bubbles burst`s you will need as many as possible= expand capacity.

Dont start, if you spent your money wisely instead of wasting it on fast-food, fags, beer, mobile phones and sky tv, you may have enough to buy a season ticket. and if the day ever came when the owd gits had a limit on them attending then what next? limit the Gingers, Gays, Disabled, Piss-Heads, etc.pity no one has commented on my point about COMMUNITY is our club, our team. oh yes how about leaving a spce in the filled-in corners for very old gits and their carers!

Wasn't the corner at the Butler Street (the one by the Boothen End) used by/cheaper for 'old gits' back in the dim & distant past?

About right for 2014, but salaries were for all staff (except Scholesy). However, you could probably employ most of the non-playing staff together with one player's wage!

For some reason 'Breakfast' doesn't appear to be on i-player which is a pity because it would have been good to put a link. The 15% point was the percentage of income for PL clubs from tickets ( not the weekly wage) - making the point that clubs in the PL do not need to hike prices

Do clubs ever try and justify the ticket prices? If so what do they say?
