Looks like a runaway for George Best with the current situation. Best on 31%, Stan on 5%. Voted but don't thiink we're going to swing this one Stan's way, as it stands.

Voted, but felt a bit odd as only voted along party lines, as a Stokie, cos never actually saw Stan play live. Saw Best though, and he was truly remarkable.
Also, how many of the age group reading and voting actually know the name Sir Stanley Matthews as well as we do?
And yes, what a peculiar list of players!

I hate internet polls for this reason, people just vote for who they feel like they should do for whatever affiliation they have.

I suppose time scale has an impact on these internet poles. Matthews being so very long ago that story's of his genius being fewer and fewer. Those who are alive that actually saw him are now dwindling and the recollections aren't being told. Where as possibly those who saw Best in his prime or players from a similar era are still passing the memories on. I'm pretty sure that in 20 years Best will have slipped down the list and joined Sir Stan in the archives, as will other greats from the 60's & 70's... And probably the 80's. And the names tripping off peoples tongues will be Beckham and today's modern names. That's my opinion... That, and true opinion is stained by 30/40 years of glory hunters. A scourge which will get worse and worse... But not in Stoke-on-trent with our club on an upward curve. Unless we have glory hunters, in which case... But I digress !! I blame the media.

Dalglish 15% and Sir Stan 5%, methinks this has been hijacked by the dippers of bins.

Vic Brit's got it right IMO. Doesn't matter what the subject is, people tend to go with 'their own times' and what else would we seriously expect. Best was from my younger days and he'll forever be (whatever else he might have been) the best footballer I've ever seen. It was all about timing with George and he was something completely different for that young generation to hang their hats on. He was very much a star of his time and those youngsters (including me) hold those days up as very 'special'.

Good post, only thing is Matthews' wider legacy suffers greatly from lack of meaningful TV footage. I've searched for Matthews on youtube and only get a few small snippets here and there. On the other hand I've seen more than enough of George Best to realise what a genius he was. In the future, for anyone who is curious enough they will always be able to discover Best's talent whereas sadly that won't be the case with Matthews. (for what it's worth, my Grandad says Messi is better than Matthews was but the fact that the two are being compared serves as high praise in my eyes)

Media and television coverage coupled with the internet means the great names from Matthews' era are all but forgotten. Our own Freddie Steele is literally unknown but he was a beast of a striker and prolific but there will be no mention of him. ATM Messi and Ronaldo for me are the best, for what it's worth. But we know that Matthews has to be in the top 4 all time greats.

Internet polls of this kind bear little reflection of any objective skills of players of different generations. By and large they reflect the support of the clubs for whom the player concerned played. While George Best was a genius, his lifestyle hardly presented a good example of how footballers should behave off the field. Stan Matthews' conduct was exemplary and his skill and work ethic have hardly ever been surpassed. In the early 60's the mere possibility that Stan Matthews would be playing for Stoke in away fixtures would double attendances at the grounds concerned.

I am lucky and privileged to have been able to have seen them both. Two completely different human beings, blessed with skills that today's generation can not imagine. This is not some one basting in nostalgia, believe me they were EXCEPTIIONAL. Matthews handled it with dignity, and for many years. George, God bless him, did not do so well.
Two Legends.

Having read and taken part in this thread I this morning looked up Stan Matthews on you tube. On there is Stan Mathews parts 1&2. About 30 mins and well worth watching.
Another small statistic, 700+ appearances and never once booked !

I too was fortunate to see them both play, however I only saw Stan when he came back to Stoke at the age of 47, so obviously I never saw him at his best. Without a shadow of doubt in my mind George Best was the finest British player I have ever seen.

Every game he played on his comeback (Home) plus Blackpool era games and the Bolton Cup Final. Oh and his testimonial match with Puskas and co. That's how I know he was better than Best!

Cool - at least you're speaking from experience. I've seen neither so mine would be Gazza or Dalglish. I'm guessing that the majority of the voters also saw neither so in that case you vote along club lines if you want to go for an old player.

Bale, Charles, Dalglish, Law, Souness???? I'll have a pint of what they are on please Think Dalglish deserves to be on there to be honest Kind of agree. I added him after! Bias confession, I have a vested interest in Dixie Dean so was cob'ed that he wasn't on the list. So my thought process was then measuring dalglish against billy and so he went on the no list. Top player though, just not better than my bias!
