Could be an interesting story to watch over the next few years?
Wonder if losing Champions League is only factor or if other factors are at work and could be bubble bursting?

25% is a staggering fall over a relatively short period of time isn't it. It would be enough to finish a few businesses but I guess they have cut their cloth accordingly to some extent. Everyone and everything falls from grace in the end, he said philosophically

I'm genuinely amazed that any more than aany (relative) handful of people were ever signed up for Sky Sports just for the CL. Who cares?
I'm more interested in their various European domestic league football coverage and their monopoly on live cricket.

I would imagine most of the disconnects arent to do with CL footy, but more to do with
a) the fees increasing despite the offering shrinking b) people are generally savvy enough now to be able to watch football in many (cough) media sources c) there is also an overload of football on TV - far too much!
Android boxes in particular on eBay are very popular for newbies (even though you can do all that for free on a PC/Laptop/Adroid device with Kodi)
Currently (know it will end) I am able to watch pretty much any game Sat/Sun in glorious HD - Stoke games have been quality all season (I watched Saturdays game in HD via 4G in a Wacky Warehouse on my Android tablet!)) - its becoming very easy to do - I reckon I could explain how to set it up in 15 minutes to a novice.
We get BT Sport free for now (will be charged at £10 soon), but I wont pay for it, firstly because the coverage is crap, and secondly I can watch it elsewhere in decent quality.
Wouldnt cancel Sky though as I love my cricket, golf and darts as well as the footy (and the F1 coverage is excellent)

PS - does anybody have figures to show if BT Sport subscriptions went up? I would doubt it was a massive boost

I've said before that I can't understand how what was it, £5.4 BILLION ever made commercial sense.
How can they possibly recover that and make a profit in 3 or 5 years, whatever it is.
At £50 per month, roughly £600 per year per subscription, leaves them needing an ambitious 3 million annual subscribers over the 3 years to break even. This is simplistic because it doesn't include income from pubs and clubs etc, but that market also appears to be on the wane.
I can't see this as commercially viable. Suspect it was more to do with going toe to toe with the new boys from BT Sport. A kind of posturing "let'ssee what you've got then".
It seems that the armchair fan for some inexplicable reason is turned on by the turgid "Champions League", so it looks as though BT may have out thought Sky on this one.

Great news for anyone that hates Murdochs power.
Also News Corp newspaper business is going down the drain due to free online news being available.
The Sun has finally just removed its stupid paywall because they were losing the battle
Would love to see his empire failing before his very eyes. Hes an old fashioned megolomaniac and just cant keep up with all the new technologies that are undercutting his margins everywhere

It's great for me and other consumers because prices are tumbling through this competition between Sky and BT, if you prepaid leave and carry it through there are great retention deals to be had.????

I cancelled my entire Sky subscription a month ago. Don't have time to watch that much live footy anyway, and the loss of CL footy and premiership and european rugby meant I was hardly watching Sky sports. The main reason though, is that I can now get all the telly and movies that I want via Netflix and Now TV apps on Apple TV for less than half of the cost of Sky and no contract (and no adverts).
I suspect more and more people will start doing this and that Sky's days are numbered.

We jacked Sky in earlier this year before I even realised that BT was the only place to watch Champions League.
I'm not really missing it that much if I'm honest.
It's surprising how few times you actually sit down and watch a game given family commitments etc when you stop and think about it.

I jacked Sky in 9 months ago. Had the basic TV, phone and broadband.
Fed up of getting letters every three months telling me my subscription was going up a pound here and there and then being told I couldn't cancel or make any negative changes to my contract.
They've been ringing me constantly for the last 3 months trying to get me to go back, even offering me the top level tv package free for 12 months, no contract and then a 60% discount after that.
Not a chance. Trust has completely gone.

No mate - Phoenix has really upped its game on matchdays with a specific live games section (its the NBC Live Extra streams - all of them!), and Woodys streams are back as well inside the Phoenix 'group' I put an all in one solution overlaying my Kodi (look up Andys Build online) - it puts every channel you would ever need and more (films and tv) as well - even a built in Karaoke system with all Sunfly and others for free! (thats Christmas Day sorted with the family lol)

Phoenix;s LiveTv section (especially the live games folder) is brill - make sure you remove any old Kodi installs first, reinstall the vanilla build, then use Andy's all in one installer The repo is kodimaster.com/repoInstall the source from zip as usual Install the program from repository Pick which custom version you want (I have Andys build on laptop, the 007 build on android, is mint!) Its pretty much an all in one install of all the best repos and channels.

Will grab some screens on Saturday.
The quality depends on the source - anything using SportsDevil is a rehash of the poor streams available at CricFree, ADHTE etc without the ads Some of the direct ones (NBC Sports etc) are like Sky Go.
Sky & BT Sports quality varies to be honest - BT ones were rubbish last night (looked like low quality ITV :-) ), but I got the same game on the same app via Fox Sports USA and it was in HD.

Well cry me a river. Makes me laugh with be though, getting people that are gullible enough to pay through the arse for a subscription to the Champions League, only to turn round and put them on another channel that isn't covered. They're all wank pots.
And fuck Murdoch.

Phoenix (NBC Sports Live Extra ), and I have just added the Ultimate RoboCop (gives you Premier League Pass)
Will give that a whirl on Sat, but had no issues with Phoenix so far this season - ace quality.
Its bizarre that the UK channels are so poorly streamed, but i wonder if the 'providers' are having to work around proxies etc giving poor quality/intermittent service.
All my US channels (Fox/ESPN/NBC) as well as Canada (Sportsnet/TSN) all streaming fine right now

Given that a couple of alternatives are
watching down the pub with your mates without subscribing to anything
or watching it on the internet in Spanish or Arabic or whatever with the volume tuned down for nothing
I can't really see how they are going to come up with a better deal than either of those choices ??????

I sort of disagree, I would rather watch it in glrious HD on my big telly without fannying around with streams and apps to watch a game on a Sat evening/Sunday afternoon with the full Sky experience, or watch the test match all day (or night like a saddo!)
Sky has its place, but they need to review the charges.
Their new Sky IQ service will cost even more money - new box with built in 'Skys version of Netflix', and up to 4 boxes in your house where you can watch different channels via WiFi (so no cables) - seems a bit horse/stable/door to me but I guess they have to try something.
Most people though cost will outweigh gadgetry

Like I tell the Villa fans at work, keep smiling mate. I'd hate to see you relegated (unless it was a straight fight with us of course). Great club Villa with (largely) sensible fans with their feet on the ground. It's going to be very, very tough mate but I hope you survive. A couple of positive results can make all the difference.
