We won't finish top 6 this season but it's what we need to be aiming for over the next few years with consistency

I think they dropped that after Liverpool won it, then didn't qualify by right, but were given a place anyway. Also another variable is Europa Lge winners get into Champs lge next season, so lets arsenal don't get out of group stages, drop into Europa, win Europa, and finish top 4, will they give Champs lge place to 5, then drop down Europa places to 6th 7th & 8Th.....

There are three UEFA Europa League places given to English clubs who fulfil the following criteria: winning the FA Cup, winning the Capital One Cup and finishing fifth in the Barclays Premier League. If the FA Cup winners finish in the top five of the Barclays Premier League, their UEFA Europa League group stage place goes to the sixth-placed team. With the Capital One Cup winners, Chelsea, now guaranteed a top-five finish, their UEFA Europa League third qualifying round place goes to the next-highest ranked team in the Barclays Premier League, the sixth-placed team. In the event of the FA Cup winners' spot going to the sixth-placed team, the Capital One Cup winners' place in the UEFA Europa League goes to the team finishing seventh

So if we dont win any of the cups ourselves we want Top 5 teams to win the FA and League Cup.
That will mean finishing 7th brings a Europa League spot.
We really do have a chance of getting to Europe this season via the cups or league position

So I've been doing some thinking,
After a recent string of good results, and the premier league possibly becoming the most unpredictable league ever.
(I can't see how anyone has won an accumalator this year unless they simply asked a 4 year old to point at which team out of each fixture he liked the most.)
It would appear that there is every chance we could finish say maybe 6th, maybe higher, maybe lower who knows.
But say we did finish 6th, what happens then, do we as fans accept this is truly a marvelous result, and hope to continually invest to maintain this position and hope that one year we can eventually win a cup.
Or with further financially investment into the premier league could the club ever realistically expect more, with the coates and bet 365 wealth common knowledge, would mass investment of millions and millions into top players in attempt for champions league football be possible?
I'm not drunk at 12.41, this is a sober post, i guess what i'm trying to say is, should we finish 6th this year and qualify for europe, being able to attract more players. With the money available from the family and the league. Could we say go out and spend 60m-80m maybe next year or the year after and dare to grow as a club. Or are we already over achieving and have to accept this is perhaps the best we'll ever be.
I dont know what the return for champions league football is, but, if the family wants to expend and grow the club and their own wealth, if the foundations are there, Could we ever hope to be more than top 6? Do you think aiming for say top 4 following mass investment the family will ever think is worth the risk?
Its a lot of what ifs or buts. But under mark hughes currently it's improvement upon improvement, so will the club rest on its lorrals and if they do, will the fan base accept it. Because some dont even to accept 2 defeats in a row, so i don't know some would respond to say a 12th place finish.
anyway like i said, just a thought

Does anybody really realise they've peaked until after they have?
Without a proper billionaire sugar daddy a consistent top six finish isn't going to happen and a consistent top four finish is one flew over the cuckoo's nest stuff.

It is a bit like trying to identify a peak in the Stock Market when it happens - with the objective of selling shares and funds and buying them back when the market reaches its next low point. I've been trying to do that for years but never managed it consistently. So, just like most football fans, I usually "remain fully invested" and am in it for the long haul.

My (Realistic?) ambitions are.
1. Stay in the premier league, year on year. 2. Continually annoy and beat Arsenal at the Brit. 3. Play entertaining and competitive football. 4. Keep the atmosphere at the Brit, and give the big boys a bloody nose every now and then (Especially Arsenal) 5. Win at The Emirates. 6. Win at Anfield. 7. Win at Old Trafford 8. WIN A CUP!! 9. Did I mention beating Arsenal?
Mainly though, I think it boils down to winning a trophy, that's what sport is about after all, and I don't think there has been a better time to do it in my lifetime.
Staying in the Premier League, building a decent squad, and giving the cups a really good crack year on year, is what I think is a reasonable ambition.

Football can go full circle. We peaked as a football club in 1972 with the League Cup win at Wembley. We may peak again very soon with another League Cup win and a great final league placing... Or an FA Cup win... But then start the questions (or continue, rather) of whether the modern day cup winning side is as good as the '72' side. Or is the top flight as good or competitive as it was back then ? The subject goes around in circles, much like football itself.

Or finish 8th and the corner is finished by next season? Corners definitely. We are still punching well above our weight when we have 27,000 average attendance every season. We need to aim for 35000-40000 before we can even claim to be equal with the Evertons and Aston Villas of this world. Those kind of numbers are possible given the progress on the pitch, but the match day experience is truly shocking and isnt being improved at all.
