After the last transfer window I thought that the gap between the top teams and "the rest" was considerably smaller than before the window. We all saw "lesser" teams signing real quality players, and I did feel that this could be the season when the final league placings could well show some big surprises.
With regard to Stoke, I suspected that we were one real quality signing short.
We will just have to wait and see ......

I think 6th is too much of a push; maybe if we'd started a bit sharper this season, or not lost West Brom, Liverpool & Watford, then there'd be a good shout for a super-season, but I'd personally think we'll comfortably finish 7th-10th.
Albeit with the League Cup in our possession, of course!

I think we are probably 2 top quality signings away from getting close to 6th place...a striker and Nzonzi replacement. sadly normal service will return and the top 6 will be as it ever was with the usual suspects although often one of them has a bad season and lets in the likes of Southampton. Out of the usual suspects Chelsea maybe this season but the rest look pretty nailed on. Out of our challengers, I still think Leicester will dip, Southampton were decidedly average against us, Palace looked pretty poor against an organised Sunderland, West Ham I don't rate which leaves Everton who look decent. My top ten finish... 1)Man City 2)Liverpool 3)Arsewipes 4)ManUre 5)Chelsea 6)Everton 7)Stoke 8)Southampton 9)Crystal P 10)Leicester
Depending on Cup wins we might get a Europa place with 7th

Not sure what Hughes actually says is quite as bold as the headline to be perfectly honest:
“Southampton have done really well in recent years finishing top 10, top eight, top seven, and we haven’t quite been able to catch them,” Hughes said. “But maybe this is the season we’ll be able to do that.”
He says we can challenge Southampton who have in turn challenged for but not achieved top 6.
That does not really equate to "we can get top six' does it?
I mean if Southampton would otherwise have finished 7th but we finish above them we'd be 7th right not 6th?
You might say to me 'what's a single league place between friends' but with Man City, Man United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs all certain to finish above us then 7th is the very best we can do. It would be our league title.

If we finish 7th, we will have won the league. Its that simple. Christ, does that mean Leicester are on course to lift the World Cup... Yes it absolutely does. In modern football, them finishing in the top 4 would be one of the biggest achievements in British football, akin to what the likes of forest and derby did in late 70's early 80's. Like Southampton last season, my prediction for Leicester is 7th, 6th if they can keep this run going to Christmas. 8th or 9th for us again though only 9 points behind Leicester, its not beyond the realms that we can overhaul them as well. 7th in my opinion is the best we can hope for this season or any other for that matter.

Some selective editing going on. Hughes does NOT say we can get top 6. He says MAYBE this is the year we can overtake Southampton. If they end in 20 th spot and we end in 19th, then we have achieved what he feels we MIGHT do.
But for me .......... in no particular order ..... Arsenal, Mancs x2, Spurs, Liverpool, leaving 6th spot as a race between us and Chelsea, Leicester, West Ham, Everton, Southampton and maybe Crystal Palace. Leicester I think are going to come unstuck and plummet, I think Chelsea have left it too late and have not sorted their issues out yet, Palace, not enough quality or consistent enough, Southampton - Leslie feels we'll be above them. That leaves us with our best shot ever and we just have to finish above West Ham (we've finished above them in 5 of the last 6 seasons) and Everton (We've only finished above them once in the past 6 seasons and they've only failed to end in the top 7 once in the past 5 seasons).
I think Everton is the team we need to set our sights on. IF we can do the double over them, I think this might be our year for a top 6 finish! C'mon Stoke ...... A belated Christmas present will go down well!

Until we lose again then we're getting relegated, then getting relegated from the Championship, Hughes will set the Brit on fire, Coatesy will sell us to Norman Smurthwaite and then we'll go out of business not once, but 62 times. And it'll all be Philipp Wollscheid's fault. Aye, but you try and tell that to the youth of today !!

We are getting better as the players are getting used to playing with each other, coupled with improving our fitness. There are not many teams with a more settled squad than ours, i think we could get top 4. The key player is Bojan (he is our david silva) if we get through the transfer window unscathed it's game on.

There are only 4 teams I would be massively surprised to finish ahead of. Thats Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal. I wouldn't be surprised if we finished above anyone else. Ergo we can finish 5th

Personally I think top 6 is just out of reach this season and sadly Liverpool will only improve and Chelsea can't be this shit again. If we were ever to do it I think Spurs are the team to overhaul - they've always seemed like they are holding on by their finger tips too me.
More relevant is what a sad indictment of modern football that a well run, financially stable club who have been in the division for 7 years, consistently upper mid table talk about 6th or 7th as the height of their ambition.

I'd feel a bit more confident about any top six, seven or eight prognostications if we scored more goals on a regular basis. All these 1-0s is making me twitchy.

28/1 best prices on odds checker for a top 6 finish. 9/4 for top half!! 28/1 I will definitely have some of that! 100 quid should do it On a side note, sky bet us at 300/1 for a league cup and FA cup double

The key to us finishing in the top half is Wolly, Shawcross staying fit and Hughes keeping the faith with them, the backup in that position if those 2 are missing is a little frightening, as shown earlier in the season. We also need Whelan to stay fit and a body in that CM position to help Whelan come the window(as Mr Coates recently alluded to). If all of that happens we can finish top half.
The key to the top 6 is all the above happening, plus Stoke getting somebody who can put the ball in the net in the window and Arnie, Bojmister & Shaq finding the form of their lives.
We are in the strange position of being a couple of injuries, in key areas, away from struggling and a couple of signings away from being a real threat at the other end.

I still can't quite believe the continuity they've achieved. This good run has been going on since last spring, and all the furore over summer and managerial change I thought would knacker them. I held out little hope for the 'Tinkerman'. But then again I thought Southampton's asset stripping and changes at the top would hamper them last year. Funny old game, and a brilliant time to be amongst the Premiership swordsmiths. The TV money has ultimately started to level the playing field. Crazy thing is we are competing and we havn't had to spend loads of it. Hughes hasn't said we'll be top six in the recent piece, but he has said previously that Europe is the aim. Cup.

We are gaining confidence by the week and it won't be long before we are banging in more goals. We have a good team so accept it. We also have a beast of a player in bojan which not too many teams have, and the ones that do are out injured. I believe in our team and so should everyone else, we have a lot of quality players and even our subs are decent. COME ON YOU MIGHTY POTTERS

You have to love The Oatcake. The other week we had thread after thread about how "We'd better believe we're in a relegation fight". Couple of wins later & everyone* is talking us up for a Top-6 finish... Oh what fun it'll be when we next lose a match & it's back to nailed on relegation.
*Of course I don't actually mean everyone, there are a small handful of posters who can actually keep a level head & realise a few defeats inna the end of the world and a few victories dunna mean we're world champs.

Whilst I think it is good that the Manager sets the club a target (which I'm sure he's said previously is scoring more goals and getting more points than last year), I do think we are way too far out from the end of the season to realistically be thinking about positions. If we're still flirting with Top5/6 come the end of March then I might start to think about it! Beating Sun'lan on Saturday will be a great start for me
