Probably the best defensive midfielder since ....Howard Kendall ? Unsung Heroes Inspire teams. A bit worrying that he got a fourth yellow card yesterday. One more and a suspension will follow. He will be a massive miss. Would it be a good idea to pick up a booking on purpose to miss the Sheffield game, or does the suspension have to be a Prem Lge match ?

One of the highlights of Saturday for me was in the tunnel when Bego was going down the line of Stoke players giving them a hug or shaking hands he got to Glen he got completely blanked and was given a laser stare that caused him to scuttle back off to the Chelsea line.

I don't know wether it's his confidence soaring but his range of passing has come on leaps and bounds during this season.
He's now like the Irish Xavi.

Whelan £500k - what a bargain. Got to be one of the best signings the club has made. And it's refreshing that he, like Walters continues to adapt to the clubs changes & progression and prove the critics wrong. In fact, Whelan has got far, far better under Hughes' management.

He is great but it would be handy to get a young Glenn Whelan in during the next transfer window . Even if it's to replace Charlie Adam for the last twenty minutes . There just seems no cover at all for those two .

I like both Whelan and Adam, but just watching back the game and I thought on the night they were both slow when on the ball in decision and releasing it, but bloody he'll, watching it back was so frustrating how bad they both were on the ball.

Our Glenn has done marvellously well to reach the both impressive and sexual cap count of 69.
This number of caps sums up his personality and style perfectly and it's a shame it has to change.
Whilst it's a shame, it is also necessary and something we should all be proud of. A fantastic player, he was outstanding last night as he always is.
But for the mean time I am going to make the most of Glenn's time on 69 caps and let loose with my imagination.
It's a truly wonderful day.

Probably the best defensive midfielder since ....Howard Kendall ? Unsung Heroes Inspire teams. I don't think you can compare Glenn to Howard Kendall, they were different types of midfielders, Howard Kendall was a very creative player. We used to call him Howard Ten Eyes because of his 360 deg vision and ability to see a pass. Also he was coming to the end of his playing career when he signed for Stoke. A better comparison would be with John Mahoney of whom Glenn reminds me a great deal. Mahoney worked his socks off every game, he did the donkey work for the flair players around him, especially Huddy and Geoff Salmons. Mahoney and Glenn are/were the unsung heroes, the type of player that doesn't perhaps get the credit they deserve, but the type that every good team has. I was a massive fan of John Mahoney and I'm a massive fan of Glenn Whelan. I don't think either Howard Kendall or 'Josh' Mahoney were classical defensive midfielders in the Whelan mould. Josh did a hell of a lot of the support running and covering in the great Hudson-Mahoney-Salmons midfield and could certain tackle, but was also more of a box-to-box player rather than an 'anchor' type. Howard Kendall was a more all-round midfielder and could certainly pick a great pass as well as putting in a challenge and scoring good goals. As others have said, Howard was near the end of his playing career when he joined us but was still class. The central defensive midfielder in our 78-79 promotion season was actually Paul Richardson, with HK playing as the creator, usually on the right of a three-man midfield. Richardson also had the knack of scoring vital goals in tight matches by driving forward from midfield. I still sometimes wonder what we could have been if we had signed HK when he was still in his prime and played him alongside Huddy

It surprises me that so many don't understand his position and what he's asked to do, like one or two on here not that long ago that wanted him to be scoring goals

Yes Glenn Whelan & Jonny Walters have both become much better players under LMH than they were under TP. He has Glenn playing in his best position and Jon has been coached by LMH and his game has improved a lot. I thought Jon was an average player and lucky to be playing in the prem under TP but now he is a quality player who would make it into a lot of prem teams starting 11.

Whelan has been outstanding this season.
Super Jon has defied all the doubters once again too. Year on year he is just absolutely relentless. New players come through the door, fans think his time is up, he goes onto prove himself invaluable as ever. Bouncebackability.
