Better than Kendall. Howard was in his final year of playing full-time when he was with us.
Certainly Kendall in his prime would have given Whelan a run for his money.

Could possibly reach 300 appearance's before the end of the season for us,even though i've been watching Stoke since 1977 i can't imagine a Stoke team now without Whelan and Shawcross in it.

Has become a beyter player since MH arrived for me. That's my opinion too Non many great whelan performances under former manager. Should still score more goals really too but the last two seasons has been so consistent.

Whelans threads are very much smaller these days , whatever could the reason be for this ? There used to be great debates about him but now there's more to talk about he struggles to get more than a few pages ? ????

He has become a better player under Mark Hughes. No doubt about it. Could it be that Mark is giving him more freedom?

Possibly, and Geoff did well shoring up the midfield under intense pressure against Chelsea. Last season, Sidwell was the DM back up; it might be his trun for a recall?

I hold my hand up. I've never been a fan of Glen, but he has been nothing short of magnificent for the last 12 months. Long may it continue, and I hope that I haven't just cursed him.

I'm sure I've read somewhere, probably on here, that Whelan is universally accepted by his team mates as being the most genuinely/naturally skilled.
True?

Along with Butland and Ryan, Whelan is one of the few MUST pick players in the squad.
There is a case for Pieters to included in the list too.

Has become a better player since MH arrived for me. Understatement of the century. Under Pulis, many were happy to throw him off the ship into the Atlantic Ocean. He's a totally different player now, but I think part of that is because Hughes is allowing Glenn to express himself more both on and off the ball. He always tackled under Tony, but was bound to what was a fairly rigid defensive system and it seemed that his only job was to break up play in his zone, if you will. Also, once on the ball, it was like a rabbit in the headlights, he would instantly give it to someone else, but was that his fault? Now, we're not only seeing him win the ball, we're seeing him bring it out of the defence, we're seeing him play important passes, just like the one he played into SJW for the goal against Chelsea. We're actually seeing that not only is Glenn Whelan a fantastic battler, and someone who will win the majority of 50/50's, but he's also very very comfortable on the ball and that's something we never saw under Tony. He's not just a better player, he's twice the player he was under Pulis. Arguably MH has given his career new light. At 31, it couldn't have come at a better time as well. He's got at least 3 or 4 more years doing what he does for us.

His possibly imminent absence does bring to light the problem we'll have in replacing him temporarily as we don't have a player as suited to the role as Glen. Even Sidwell in his prime was more of an attacker and Cameron is only an occasional occupier of that position. I'd like us to make some sort of decision soon on Ireland who seems further away from a game now that Bojan is back, Adam is a regular and Afellay looks like he could be an option. I'd let Sidwell and Ireland go as soon as and bring in a CDM who can play with Glen and instead of him when he's unavailable. Whelan has never been the quickest and we lack dynamism in the middle with him and Adam. Put a younger, quicker midfielder alongside him who can win the ball and give it to the creative talent in front of their eyes and we will prosper. It may not happen until the Summer but it's still where we need to be stronger and that can't come quickly enough for me. For all of Adam's attributes his lack of pace and energy does hurt us when we're under pressure.

If Glenn was to get a long term injury this year, our form would be absolutely destroyed.
Sidwell and Adam in the middle?.... *throws up*

Hi Glen Numerous fellow professionals have said that about Whelan, yes. I'm not sure it was skills they were talking about though and am sure the word used was "technically the best". There is a difference I guess.

Sidwell and Adam in the middle?.... *throws up* Whoever came in for Whelan wouldn't let us down and I include Sidwell in that as well. We have a very good squad at the moment, full of players who are more than capable of stepping up to the mark and help us when regular picks aren't available. If we can cope with the absence of Shawcross, we can cope with the absence of anyone, including Whelan, fantastic though he is.

Probably the best defensive midfielder since ....Howard Kendall ? Unsung Heroes Inspire teams. I don't think you can compare Glenn to Howard Kendall, they were different types of midfielders, Howard Kendall was a very creative player. We used to call him Howard Ten Eyes because of his 360 deg vision and ability to see a pass. Also he was coming to the end of his playing career when he signed for Stoke. A better comparison would be with John Mahoney of whom Glenn reminds me a great deal. Mahoney worked his socks off every game, he did the donkey work for the flair players around him, especially Huddy and Geoff Salmons. Mahoney and Glenn are/were the unsung heroes, the type of player that doesn't perhaps get the credit they deserve, but the type that every good team has. I was a massive fan of John Mahoney and I'm a massive fan of Glenn Whelan.
