Chatted for ages with Lucas Neil tonight and got some really interesting snippets' about mark Hughes.
Lucas couldn't speak highly enough of him, said he's the best manager he's played for and that if he hadn't gone to man City he'd have been manure manager by now. Said Bowen and Eddie were great coaches and training was always superb. Also said he was the fittest he'd ever been during their reign when I asked about training methods.
Of more interest were those relating to his time with millwall, their games v Stoke and his memory of their 9 man 2-0 victory down at the new den back in 1998.
He remembers targeting several very poor stoke players, David Oldfield being one and Brian small being the other. "no legs, no heart". Summed it up perfectly.
Other interesting comments were about England players not being bothered about playing for their country, fabricating injuries so as not to play and seeing playing for a top premier league club, rather than their country as the pinnacle of a career.
It would be remiss of me to name names but it was very illuminating and much as I'd suspected for many years.
He also agreed with me that shawcross should be a regular England squad member and that comment was made before he knew I was a stoke fan.
Seen him loads and never been arsed to speak to him but he was a thoroughly decent bloke and seemed to love the game and his own country.
He also said some funny things about black boots and the day he had to wear flashy coloured boots.

It will be a temporary thing as he had no problem naming Oldfield and Small. Like anyone would be bothered about those two? He would have been a very young player in those days. I was amazed he could remember the game and even more amazed he could recall players his teammates were instructed to target.

Lowest moment of mine and many others stoke supporting life I suspect. Funnily enough, as we celebrated promotion on the pitch v Leicester some bloke whose face I know despite never having spoken to him, tapped me on the shoulder, hugged me and screamed "this is for millwall away with 9 men men. This is for fucking millwall" :-)

Re; the dark days, surely 4-1 defeat against Bristol Rovers was the low point?

I didn't go that match, must of been horrific, my personnel low was the Wigan match a mate of mine was hanging over the dugout telling bally to do the right thing. Another low was Oxford at home mid week where I think but I'm not sure a bloke called Mark Stein scored the winner in a 1-0 defeat I left the ground in tears knowing we were virtually relegated which was confirmed at Newcastle on the Saturday. where I was nearly arrested for foul and abusive language The only other time I had tears was the England Germany semi

I wish it was but sadly I was at the game to watch the horror show unfold. We only went to the game because we signed lee Collins on the Friday before the game.

Birmingham at home 7-0 when a past his best Paul Furlong took us to pieces. Those suggesting slow, immobile footballers..... Steven Tweed fuck me.
