I think he could work if we had a pacey three behind him to break out from his hold up play and flick ons. But I just don't think our current set would do that. Arnie, Shaq & Bojan aren't pacey enough?

I like what I see in terms of his ability and work-rate with Joselu.
BUT he just doesnt seem to have that predatory instinct to get in the box and score goals.
Its almost like he started out as a defender but when people noticed hes got great skill, plus hes quite tall they stuck him upfront to see if it worked.
Hes more mobile than Crouch, but honestly Crouch wins hands-down in finishing ability inside the box. Joselu would do well to watch and learn from RoboCrouch. If he could add that penalty-box quality to his game then he could be quite a player for us

I wonder if there are any compilations of his goals knocking around on the web, so we could see what sort of goals they were - be they long range or inside the 6 yard box etc.

Arnie, Shaq & Bojan aren't pacey enough? They are, but they don't seem to break beyond the striker much. Bojan the most likely to but still not as much as needed to be effective with Joselu's current style.

Arnie, Shaq & Bojan aren't pacey enough? They're not slow, but they're not exactly electric are they? Compared to the likes of Diouf and Moses.

Cheers for that. Plenty of variety there and doesn't seem afraid to get in the box. Nice one with his left foot at the end. Not as many headers as I expected.

....would he be as good as Bojan, Arnie and Shaq were at the weekend. He's getting a lot of criticism for cameo appearances, but he hasn't had the minutes like the others and I'm wondering if he got some settled game time would he shine in the end?
Thoughts?

He holds it up well and has a good touch but it's hard to break into the first 11, I like him though.

I think with the quality we have we can afford to give him the time he clearly needs to adapt.
I trust Hughes' judgement, especially on attacking players, and people wrote off the likes of Bojan, Shaqiri, Wolly and others. They all came good once they had time so hopefully it is the same with Joselu. Hopefully he will get some game time and a goal for his confidence over a busy Christmas/New Year period.

Not in my opinion, on Saturday the substitutions showed a massive difference in our starting eleven, skill wise that is and we looked poorer for them coming on.
Hughes has created a massive problem for himself and us, in a very positive way that is.

Hughes has created a massive problem for himself and us, in a very positive way that is. Every sub seemed to reduce our attacking outlet. Afellay was the nail in the coffin. We actually did fuck all once he went off. I think Joselu has plenty of talent but we can't really waste time. We're playing well. He could do with a goal. His miss in the cup will have done his confidence no favours. We need to persevere though.

I'd certainly pick him ahead of Crouch, Oddie and on current form Walters. Alas I think a place on the bench is all he can hope for for a while. Gouranga.

Him and Diouf would be a good pairing in a 442.
Should we ever have cause to play that way.

Apart from the score - one of the few things I was disappointed last Saturday
he seemed not to want to get involved in anything remotely physical and, he ducked anything like a physical challenge

He has a good footballing brain. I just think he needs to be more aggressive in his 50/50s. He certainly has the physique but he just needs to use it more.

Difficult to really judge Joselu as he's had such a limited amount of opportunities. Hughes has done enough to prove he's got an eye for finding the right player and I think we can all agree that new players need some time to settle. In Joselu's case, we need to be extra patient because his opportunities have been limited due to our formation which only allows one striker. He's shown some promising glimpses and I think we'll see him improve as he get's more game time. We really do have a wealth of attacking talent right now and the competition for places will hopefully keep everyone firing on all cylinders. With a busy Christmas period coming up, along with League Cup semi's and hopefully an extended run in the FA Cup, we'll see a few fringe players given their chance to show what they can do.

Either wimped out or desperate not to get himself injured, either way needs to show a bit more....

It concerns me that he came with a reputation as a target man who never loses an aerial challenge, yet he looks about as physical and dominant as Michael Owen. On Saturday he never even got close to challenging for the ball on most occasions.

I would loan him out for a few months so he can get some matches behind him. A club like Stoke don't spend £6m on a player to loan him out, if we keep up our recent form he's going to find it tough to get in the team (even Diouf can't force his way in) but I suspect he will have his part to play later in the season. We've been fairly lucky with injuries so far and it's important we have plenty of options, that said, I think Odemwingie, Sidwell and potentially Crouch (if he's keen on first team football) could leave in January.

This is the crux isn't it? Even brilliantly talented players like Bojan and Shaqiri seem to need a lot of game time to get used to English Premier conditions as well as fitting in with their team mates. We have seen foreign players hit the ground running like Pelle and Ulloa last season and but it doesn't happen often. Some clubs like Newcastle seem to buy loads of players who never hit a successful run. But, for all our wealth of attacking talent we are still not scoring many goals. We all said 10/10 for Saturday's performance, but really we should deduct a point for missed chances.
