There's loads in the town mate. Normally head to Sam Jack's. Good craic in there with home fans and topless barmaids.

There is one by the petrol station where you get dropped off by the official coaches, although it may get a little jammed considering the amount going this year.

Newcastle is like Liverpool
Just turn up and if you can't find a decent pub it's time to call it a day

Given the history that exits between both clubs there are certain pubs that should perhaps be avoided (Raffertys and The Star Inn spring to mind) but all of the others will be fine. Given the ground is very central I could sit here and name you 50 without really thinking about it much at all. You can be in the pub at 245 and in your seat 255 in nearly all of them. Some good ones ...
The Hotspur (opp M&S) on Percy St, decent crowd, good ale, Sky & BT Sport The Forth, Pink Lane, great food and ale, no Sky so more of an eclectic football and non football crowd The Town Wall, opposite The Forth, as above The Bodega, Westgate Rd, massive football boozer, good ale, close to SJP Bridge Tavern, new brew pub on the Quayside, great pub Rosies - one of the closest pubs to SJPm chocker (note Newcastle's naughty lads sup across the road, go steady) Strawberry, next to SJP, chocker, but OK Trent House, quirky pub near ground, nice crowd, music pub Newcastle Arms, decent real ale pub Tilleys, near the Bodega, decent ale
For those staying overnight, the Ouseburn is where its at if you are a cool cat. Avoid the Bigg Mkt, also lots of pubs on Collingwood St. Newcastle is an amazing city, very working class, people live for the match and going out, however take the pi$$ though and someone will give you a clip, its just like Stoke in that respect. Look for trouble, you'll find it, have a good time and respect your surroundings you'll have a superb weekend.

For hotels try Jesmond or perhaps Whitley Bay. In the city centre you have Sleeperz, Sandman, The Jurys (x2) and a huge Hilton plus the Premier Inn and a host of others.
Jesmond is 10 mins from the city an Whitley Bay is 30 mins on the Metro, stacks of B&Bs in Whitley Bay.

Had a good night in the Centurion, right by the train station, although it wasnt a football event, just drinking/socialsing. Was dissapointed with the Long Bar across the road, i was expecting a pub reminiscent of the Michael Caine scene in Get Carter -"IN A THIN GLASS!!" click click click, but all they've done is stolen the name

Bacchus is a decent real ale pub. Think theres a place on high bridge called the victoria hotel.....get to it through a little courtyard.....cheap as chips. You really cant go wrong with Castle....so many pubs for so many different clientele. Really is a top notch place.

Right in the city centre just follow the Geordies. Tayman's right, keeping walking up (northerly) away from the river. The ground is at the top of the town centre. Visitors section is at the north end of the ground, hope you've got a head for heights and don't suffer nose bleeds! Note: when you leave the stewards usually direct visiting supporters to the west side of the ground.

Great info also my first time to Geordie land. Good to hear train station is close to SJP. Apart from pubs any tourist stuff to see walking distance from station/SJP? Is metro worth using? Is the 1744 train back a realistic time I could catch after final whistle, factoring in getting out the ground/walk?

Thank you for the great response (keep them coming). We are traveling Friday and having two nights in Whitley Bay. I am told only 30 mins on the metro from the city centre. I live in Whitley Bay pal, well officially Cullercoats but my house straddles the WB/Cullercoats border. Ignore OwdeStokie, The Fire Station is rancid, the best pub in WB is The Rockcliffe Arms, my local and 2 mins from the Metro. Given you have 2 nights you might want to consider Tynemouth on the Friday night. Its a great village, loads of pubs and places to eat. The best curry house at the coast is the Shakira, which is very close to The Rockcliffe Arms. WB was once a proper night out but its dead now, people go to town or Tynemouth. On the Saturday morning try a walk along the sea front and get a fry up at the Surf Café, Allards or The Priory Café. Also, if there are a few of you then it is cheaper to get taxis to and from town. Its a fixed fare of £13.50, the firm is East Coast, number is 0191 253 3777 Don't get a black cab from Newcastle to WB, its about £30, phone East Coast, 100% reliable. As many have said, you cant go wrong in the North East, fab place which is why I never moved back after Uni 26 years ago!
