Whelan, Shawcross, Delap, Walters were all major signings for the club and a major factor in our position wee are in now.

So to summarise, those that said in the Whelan thread that he's our best value signing 'ever' were clearly talking out of their arses. He barely makes any top 3 lists. Tit

Best value; Mama, Rory, Abdy and Sorro. Didn't cost much and were instrumental in keeping us up.
Worst value; where do I start?

We have done some seriously shrewd business in the last 10 years. The odd catastrophe too but we are where we are now because of signings like these, nothing to do with big money stars. Beattie and Ethers was a crucial double swoop I never thought of good shout BMS. In the last decade are there any clubs with as many shrewd signings as we have listed here? I doubt it.

Andy Wilkinson has got to be best value for money. He cost us nothing and was a great servant to us city through and through and an absolute City Legend

One from left field .
I can't find the thread for worst value signings. So I'll put it on this thread. Apologies.
Considering our position, the state the club was in and how little money we had. I nominate two.
First. We had the windfall from the Griffin sale. I saw this player in the same pre season, and thought he was shit then. We blew 500k on Kyle Lightbourne from Cov. Surely that money could have been better spent?Kamara seemed to sign a player every day during that dark period and didn't do any homework on any of them. None survived or excelled for the club. Slow, ponderous and the touch of a rapist. Dreadful. Relegation was a certainty.
Andy Cooke. A 300k signing during the Icelandic period. Money was pretty scarce. Gudjon decided to spend a significant amount of league one money on a player that had never been prolific for any team he'd played for.Hard working, yes. But we were screaming out for a goal scorer. He didn't fit any of the criteria we were looking for. Dedication, hard work but with little end product . A signing that raised many an eyebrow.

Jimmy Greenhoff only cost us £100,000. Wow 1969–1976 Stoke City 274 games (76goals) £100,000 was serious money in the 1960s. I'd hazard a guess that Stoke were one of the few teams to splash six figures on a player before 1970.

I can think of plenty of excellent bargain buys, a lot of which have been mentioned here, but from 1 team alone in the eighties I'd like to nominate
Chamberlain Thomas Watson
(I think we splashed a bit more on McIlroy)

I can't agree that either Kitson or Tonge should appear in any 'worst' list. Kitson was treated very poorly by TP and Tonge was hardly given a chance to play. 'Best'? Current era Glenn-and a shout from the earlier times for Denis Violett, who was very important in or revival-a calming and intelligent presence and a great penalty taker.
