1985. A truly awful 0-0 draw at home to Wimbledon which for some reason was on a Friday night. They went up that season and the Crazy Gang was born.
I remember an early season home game against Grimsby that season. Tony Ford ripped Mick Mills to pieces and MM ended up buying him and he became one of my favourite ever Stoke players.

1985 we decided to watch a Stoke game from every stand and terrace in the Vic. That Friday night game we stood in the away end with the Wimbledon fans.
I think they sussed us quite early, especially when the paddock lads recognised us and sang the Stokies here, Stokies there' chant while they pointed in our direction.
Still, there were no goals to celebrate.

Just looked that up on Wiki. Vale played at home the following the day, so obviously the Staffs. Police couldn't handle both teams being at home on the same day. Our crowd v Wimbledon was 6,708 and Vale's crowd v Swindon was 5,073. Vale were in Division 4 at the time.

All I can remember is Wimbledons all white kit and Nigel Winterburn being the best player on the park. Speaking of crowds that year, it was interesting the extra few thousand that we got in the FA cup against Notts County in mid week. The FA cup still had a real appeal with the general public then.

Newcastle pubs don't count so on that basis I'm the winner as I suggested the Regent. More than once as I recall. Newcastle chippys aren't much good either OS so can I collect my prize from St Mary's Fish Bar instead ? Shaws chippy on the Iron Mkt used to be excellent. Cooked in beef drippin

The 80s wasn't that bad , 16000 at home to Everton in the youth FA Cup final, Chamberlain murdering defenses week in week out ,Watching him terrorize 3 Brighton defenders they put on him for 90 minutes, beating a very good Liverpool team 2-0 with class, Micky Thomas wounder goal , the madness of them 4-4 with Luton, George running to the half way line after scoring against Leeds and blowing a kisses to the Boothen End , beating Leeds 6-1 then 7-1 the season after, Watching Inchy becoming a class player, then breaking my heart and signing for Everton ,then coming back with them and knocking us out the cup, watching one of the crapest games on a cold mid-week night 1-1 cup game against Grimsby , goals scored 1st and 90th minute and fuck all in-between, Bill Asprey nearly dieing because of the stress of management at the time, Mick Mills time in charge , us going down and Vale having a good season in the same league , then with them being a league above us the finishing with Alan Ball, yep the 80s were pretty crap in the end

Recall the Wimbledon game and your right it was awful,my abiding memory from that game was their keeper Dave Beasant taking free-kicks all night from close to the half way line. They played for free kicks anywhere and just launched it into the box all night long.Never seen a game also when Stoke got caught offside so much.It was terrible, think that's the reason i remember it so well.Possibly the worst ever game i've been.

Charlie's, Wheatsheaf, Talbot, back to Charlie's then down to the Victoria for a quick one before kick off. After the game was always Charlie's and Talbot before heading off for a few closer to home. Same routine for most Saturday home games.
I remember being in Charlie's early doors when Millwall showed up. Police had locked us in and that little Welsh woman (forget her name now) that ran the place stood behind the bar with a rounders bat just in case ! She was only little but took no shit. Great pub Charlie's was in them days. The football was mainly dire but the pubs were top class, full of good lads and great banter. You didn't need to know everyone, you'd just nod to the faces and you knew if it all kicked off they were right by your side.
I've not drunk in Stoke pre game for ages now but can't imagine it being anywhere near as good these days.

Used to play nogger for Valentines before it became Charlie's in the 80s.. Drinking was centred down Liverpool Rd in the Star and the Phoenix.. remember Villa bringing 10000 when they won the league.. They took Parksy and co in the Sea Lion but they couldn't take Ron and Pat with her titanic tits in the Star!

That was when Wall turned up and a black lad in blue long coat pulled out a machete and began enthusiastically wailing it around. Outside the Sheaf on the opposite corner. Coppers wouldn't touch him, proper off his head, that one. Nasty little group of older lads and only a handful off them. After the game some Wall dried to run our lot over in their car down London Road. Interesting times back then, certainly not dull. Charlie's, Boxing Day game, everyone ratarsed. A certain chap got his cock out and stood up on the table taking a piss.

Was that the Millwall game that the big skinhead jumped into the boothen paddock from the seats? Fucking loon he was, we'd had the bad luck of meeting him by the Glebe when we were walking to Charlie's from the station.
That Everton FA youth cup game I was in Stoke end seats and it kicked off in the concourse cause it was mixed supporters. Mad really when you think about it now

One of them showed us a nice shiny blade tucked inside his coat. Rentamob. I think different games but I'm not 100%. One year they brought about 400 and every one was a big horrible lump. No kids, women, scarfers just lumps. I think if memory serves, that was after our visit down there where we gave an excellent account of ourselves and reacquainted ourselves with the OKR. London Bridge afterwards for a dance. That was another game everyone claims to have been present at, but we took a hand selected 75-80. Nowadays even Wall take families, scarfers to away games. Times have changed so much it's unrecognizable.

Pretty sure it was our first game against them an I remember it being warm, t shirt weather. He was horrible. Dived into the paddock, got a kicking, then stood at the front of the Stoke end seats with a big smile on his face.

Yeah that's the geezer. They stood outside Charlie's just waiting for the door to open for a few mins then he walked forward and pressed his face up against the window. Probably only 15 or 20 of them if I remember right but every one of them looked menacing. It was early doors when they turned up, maybe about 12ish. Things could have got very nasty if it'd been an hour later.

Mad really when you think about it now On a footballing note, the Everton game was a bit of a non-event, it was the semi v Arsenal that got everyone going as we gave them a real lesson to get to the final. Two or three years later, most of our players were in non-league or had jacked the game in completely while about six of the Arsenal team were in their first team winning the league title.

OKR was Jan '86 so I'm reliably informed.

They had the terracing of the Stoke End and the seats where it curled round to the Buttler, they climbed over into the butler seats when a mob in the butler paddock started singing " who the fucking hell are you?" at them, we had unwisely relocated to them seats that year cos we'd just been promoted to div1 and wanted be closer to the away mobs, 6 of us. I'm pleased to say they didn't get past us, but that was mainly due to some absolute lunatic in a stoke shirt who took them all on. I was also at CBL in 86 when we walked down the OKR, about 50 of us. Not for the faint hearted.

It could be, I know we drank somewhere central before, we got the train to elephant and castle then walked the old Kent road, arriving few minutes after kick off if memory serves me right. It was indeed lively at new cross but no comparison to London Bridge where we were, as it were, Bushwacked.
