Glen Whelan should not be defending our near post on set piece situations. Already this season it's cost us on two occasions, firstly Eric Dier's header at Spurs and secondly Giroud's header today. I appreciate Glen doesn't have the height to mark man to man but we need somebody else marking that zone at the near post, teams are deliberately targeting it and it wont be the last time we are caught out in this area this season if we don't address it. For Giroud's header today we had 6 foot 1 Marco Van Ginkel at the back post marking absolutely nobody, surely in that situation it would make more sense to have him covering the front post area with his added height? No clean sheets in our first six games in all competitions this season, with or without Ryan that is not acceptable and has to improve.

Agree Luke, me and Bayern said same on twitter.
Anyone can cover that position better than him, Cameron, Wolly, Wilson, MVG, Pieters, Diouf, Joselu, Crouch, Walters. Whoever is on at the time

Anyone would think we can't be bothered towork on defending set pieces in training. Sod that lads it's much more fun passing in triangles around the centre circle.

We don't have as many tall players as we used to so matching up our players to mark the opposition is going to be more difficult. Maybe Whelan should pick up one the opposition's shorter players. Van Ginkel does not seem to be particularly strong in ariel duels, however the zonal job on the near post is more about providing an obstacle to the near post ball; as a tall man he should be ideally suited to that role.

Agreed. Don't put Glenn in that position. Not big enough.

Agreed. Don't put Glenn in that position. Not big enough. His size wasn't the problem yesterday, it was moving about three or four yards forward as the free kick was being taken instead of holding his position.

To be honest I think several of our players need to learn something about marking a man when it comes to set pieces! It really has not been good for a long time now!

Seems we've moved to a more zonal system now haven't we? If something doesn't work you need to reconsider what you're doing! Both last season and this season so far we have conceded too many goals from set pieces. If there is one player at Arsenal you will make sure don't receive the ball from set pieces it should be Giroud. The same probably go for the Spurs game where Dier statistically will be among Spurs' most dangerous men in these situations. Be more tactical and sort it out!
