I thought he was exceptional for us. I don't remember anyone else at the time thinking anything different to that. But now every time his name comes up on here folks are lining up to stick the boot in. Its like someone rewrote history one day, just the strangest thing He was good but not exceptional. I remember a game v Newcastle I think, when he came out of his area to clear a ball, missed completely and the striker ( Big Mac possibly ) ran around him to put the ball in an empty net.He used to flap at crosses too.Fox,Begovic and many others werr all better for us It was Alan bloody Gowling. It was on Star Soccer as well.

Don't think Shilton has much time for us - his success with forest obviously is going to stand out over us but it wasn't just coincidence that Englands 2 best keepers from that era came through our club The coincidence being we bought them both from Leicester? No the fact that we obviously were pretty good at spotting keepers and getting them in - in fact we seem to still be able to find them in this era

Watched it with my mate and we both couldn't help but feel he oozes a certain smugness. Like, maybe I got the wrong end of the stick but considering how gracious Gordon Banks is and indeed Ray Clemence, Shilton just seems to be very up himself. Maybe I've got the wrong end of the stick though.

Worth a watch... sorry if already posted. TEST I saw his after-dinner-speech type thing at an industry do, not that far from Stoke. In this speech he recounted his laddish exploits and we journeyed down memory lane in his East Midlands rhetorical. He didn't mention Stoke once.

Its like someone rewrote history one day, just the strangest thing No rewriting of history at all as far as I am concerned, Shilton whilst at Stoke was mediocre at best, maybe it was because we were spoiled by Banks's performances over the years,in my50 odd years of watching Stoke, Shilton would not get in my top 5 goalies. (based on his performances for us.)

Shilton was past it in 86, let alone 90.

He cost us an awful lot of money at the time for a position where we had adequate cover or could have bolstered our cover cheaply imho. We were still paying the instalments on him years after he left us.
May have cemented the Mini's reputation but did nothing for the Hillman Imp.

No the fact that we obviously were pretty good at spotting keepers and getting them in - in fact we seem to still be able to find them in this era Not really difficult to spot the world's best keeper at the time followed by the England keeper. And we had some pretty moderate ones between Fox and Simo.

His signing for us completely nullified Hudson as Shilton used to just kick the ball as far as he could rather than roll to the fullbacks or midfielders. Also as earlier mentioned he cost England in 3 world cups. 1974 qualifier v Poland he lets a 20 yard daisy cutter go under his body 1986 he is out jumped by a guy who is 5ft 7in ( if Clemence had been in goal Maradonna would have needed dentures) 1990 He lets a deflected free kick that looped 20 yards in the air sneak over his already prone body.
In short one of the most over rated players ever for Stoke and England.

Did he mention when he was shafting somebodys wife in his Jag' (Tina ?), husband arrived, Shilt's drove off in a panic with his kecks around his ankles and promptly crashed into a lamppost. 'Twas in all the papers at the time.

I remember the incident like it was yesterday, had a great side on view from the Boothen Paddock as Shilts came dashing out from the Stoke end goal only to miss his kick!

Disagree I was there in the 70s when he played a major part in our promotion and the best team we have ever ever had, to mention just a few of the greats Greenoff Hudson pejic convoy and many more. Great keeper and put Stoke on the map again mansell no way. Convoy? C.W. McCall? Perhaps terry was easier to spell

Shilton was brilliant for Forest and Southampton and for a long v time,England. Past it in 1990? Yes. In 1986? No. Being accused if being 'outjumped' by a guy with his arm as high as can be is bollocks. Clemence was done by 1986 too.
Don't think Woods was all that. Who else was there,Coton?

Personally I think he was over-rated. As you say, there probably wasn't them many alternatives around at the time. Woods was bang average, and Seaman was still finding his feet. When I watch old footage of Shilton, he just looks so stiff and lacking in any flexibility. His efforts to save those penalties against the West Germans in 1990 were feeble, and the deflected goal off Parker was a poor effort as well.

He was a show pony and not fit to lace Banks boots, never mentions us. We should have played Farmer and spent his money on the stand roof!

I loved it in the Boothen Paddock, usually I was right behind the visitors dugout by the tunnel, good view of the game, plenty of stick given to the opposition manager and the match officials at half-time/full-time, I could be in the bookies 5 minutes before kick-off and in the chippy 5 minutes after full-time, great days!

Come on pal he was a fantastic keeper and we paid top dollar for him, if we didn't have to had sell him for the financial saviour of the club who knows his peak was when he left us
