Let’s get it out the way early, the two red cards today were downright poor refereeing but sadly predictable. Ibrahim should have kept his hands to himself know matter the provocation, we’re not Barcelona where officials will merely admonish petulance we are Stoke and that kind of reaction is going to result in a card, though a yellow card should have been the outcome but Oliver is an officious little robot who is a poor referee.
The Adam one while not being vicious or over the top did leave him open to interpretation and his reputation got him a red card. All that said two yellow cards and the game would have been served well.
As for the match itself, we were in control and while it’s never easy to break down a Pulis side I do believe we would have eventually, the reduction to 9 men was a killer, yet after half time we really made an effort and could have got something from that game. Albion looked a very average side devoid of ideas and if we had got a point it wouldn’t have been false reflection of the game of 9 v 12.
It was a good reception for the former manager, he earned it for what he achieved here but I hope the love in is finally over. That Albion side were painful to watch and yes they won but without Mr Oliver I am totally convinced we would have beaten them comfortably in the end.
Our start does of course bring cause for concern but I would point out it’s not much different from both seasons under Mark, slow burners that don’t really ignite till about October. I do hope he will add a little muscle to the midfield; you need some graft to make the craft shine through. I am not sure whether Van Ginkel can provide that just yet. I know for many years muscle was all we had in midfield but you need a balance ad as of yet we haven’t seen it. Someone to help Glen out in preventing the opposition coming onto us will allow the creative players opportunity to play with more freedom.
I see some are questioning whether Shaq can cope with the Premier League; 12 months ago the exact same comments were applicable to Bojan. Shaq is a quality player and he’s been here 5 minutes chill out and let him settle in, he will adapt and then we will see the best of him. I warned against those making rushed judgements based on a couple of games. If we are struggling come Christmas then I will worry before then we need to find our shape and best 11, Ryan will hopefully be back before November and lets judge the team when all the major components are firing again, of course we have to slowly ease Bojan back in and then we will see some special football.
We don’t need a major overhaul just a little tune up, a combative player in the middle and possibly an experienced centre back till Ryan is fit and we will be fine. I think we need to except we are changed and sometimes it requires some patience, the expectation levels are raised and people expect immediate results., well Chelsea are the Champions and they have yet to find their feet just yet, we like them will find ours and once more finish in the right half of the table.

Well said Ted, as always, there of those of us who have patience and can see the bigger picture, and those who have pissy wet knickers at the slightest hint of something not quite the status quo.

Shaqiri will be absolutely fine. He was dancing through West Brom with increasing ease. Just had to either do it all himself or he ran out of support. When he did use diouf the ball bounced off him and the attack broke down.

I can't disagree with any of that Ted. As for the Afellay incident, two yellows would have been fine - but if there had to be a red for Afellay then it should surely have been accompanied by a red for Gardener. Either way we'd have gone on to win the game methinks. I'm sure you are right in your assessment of Adam as well. I don't know if it was intentional or an accident but I'm pretty sure that if it had been any other player on the pitch, the ref would have kept his card in his pocket because there would have been doubt in his mind. The trouble is that Adam has got himself a reputation for sly deliberate fouls. That reputation is, in part, deserved. Sometimes he will have been unlucky but on some occasions his red cards have been fully deserved. That being so, he's a marked man and he'd best remember that every time he steps onto the pitch. I listened in disbelief to the caller on P&G who slagged off both Shaqiri and Hughes. It will take a game or two, but I agree that Shaqiri, like Bojan before him, will prove to be a star player for us. Only one thing I would add is that, despite being confident that we will "come good" sooner rather than later, I still feel we need to get another back four player and cover/competition for Whelan. I thought Whelan was magnificent yesterday - but I dread to think what would have happened if he had been injured or red carded - we'd have got slaughtered. Sadly, it seems Sidwell can'y do Whelan's job and Van Ginkel needs time (and that is taking an optimistic view) - so, if I were the management, I'd be looking for a holding midfielder by Tuesday tea time.

Good post Ted. I think we may need to take one step back before making a giant leap next season. Sparky reminds me of Waddo. He's building a jigsaw. Sometimes some pieces don't fit exactly and we are still missing some key pieces. It reminds me of the 73-4 season which was a struggle before it all came together in 74-5.

Bang on Ted.
It only takes a couple of losses for the real plums in our support to come out of the woodwork.
I saw plenty yesterday to show that we'll once again compete for the top 10.
The start to the season is always a bit all over the place for most teams.

We will click at some point, then someone is in for a tonking. I agree with this point. Good balanced read from Ted above as usual. With regard to the gimp on Radio Stoke, I didn't hear him; I've stopped listening. They evidently keep a selection of these tools on speed dial ready to generate a controversy and "debate". In addition the Friday night P&G is just a juvenile and amateurish embarrassment.

Another well prepared report Ted. Agreed on the midfield point, but one of a centre back, (midfielder as you have said) or Austin would do for me before the transfer closes.

Couldn't agree more with this, people with sandy fannys like that twat on praise and grumble yesterday, haven't a clue and probably didn't even see what the majority of us saw yesterday.

I like the idea of Austin but surely with us getting jhosolu that's us done in regards to forwards. We need a replacement for N'Zonzi and I'd be happy

We are still in transition, but the quality we have will shine through. I now watch Stoke games home or away knowing we have a chance of winning, not waiting for when the opposition score and then seeing our game plan over!

This is much like when Sparky first took over.
It's a period of transition, and once everything clicks together we'll be formidable.
I thought we'd be 3 points better off when I woke up yesterday morning but it was one of those bizarre games every team has at some point in the season, thankfully we've got ours out of the way early, I'm resigned to us remaining in the bottom 3 after the Arsenal game but after that there is reason to look up instead of down.
Now I've said that we'll probably win at the Emirates.
Only Stoke.
